AARP Commemorates the 90th Anniversary of Social Security's Founding

Celebrating 90 Years of Social Security

On August 14, 2025, AARP proudly celebrates the 90th anniversary of the Social Security Act's signing, a monumental event that has shaped the financial landscape for American workers. The introduction of this act marked a pivotal moment, ensuring that millions of Americans have a layer of financial security, dignity, and a source of income in their retirement years.

Today, Social Security stands as a crucial lifeline, providing benefits to over 69 million individuals across the United States. Experts project that this number may rise to approximately 82 million as we approach its centennial, highlighting the program's vital role in the lives of older adults. For over 40% of older citizens, Social Security is not merely a supplement; it's the primary source of income that allows them to retire with dignity. In a time where the cost of living continues to rise, this program promises to be an essential safety net, especially in terms of inflation protection.

In Mississippi alone, around 691,000 residents currently depend on Social Security, with 281,000 relying on it for over half of their income. As we envision the future of this program over the next 90 years, it is paramount that its integrity remains intact for the citizens of Mississippi and beyond. The implications of potentially losing Social Security would be devastating for many. As Audrey Bell, a resident from Horn Lake, poignantly remarked, "If Social Security were taken away, we would barely have enough to pay our bills, with no spending money at all."

Moreover, the economic impact of Social Security on the state is staggering, contributing about $13.1 billion annually to Mississippi's economy. Such financial infusion underscores the importance of sustaining and fortifying this essential program for generations to come. Kimberly L. Campbell, the State Director of AARP Mississippi, stated, "AARP is proudly honoring the legacy of Social Security while fighting to protect and strengthen it for older Americans today and for our children and grandchildren."

Throughout the summer, AARP Mississippi has organized various celebratory events to recognize this significant milestone, aiming to raise awareness about the importance of Social Security while encouraging citizens to advocate for its preservation. One such celebration occurred on the anniversary date with a festive Picnic in the Park at LeFleur's Bluff State Park, featuring music, games, educational resources about Social Security, and, of course, food that brought many community members together. The event, which took place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., exemplified the joy and sense of community that Social Security fosters among older Americans.

As we commemorate this significant anniversary, AARP reaffirms its commitment to ensure that Social Security remains robust for current and future beneficiaries. The promise of a stable income during retirement must endure, and AARP will continue to advocate for policies that support this vital program.
