Grand Canyon University Expands Nursing Program in Florida

Grand Canyon University (GCU) is stepping up to combat the nursing shortage in Florida by establishing a new site in Miramar for its accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program. Officially launched on May 4, this expansion aims to boost the number of qualified nursing professionals trained and ready to enter the workforce.

The first cohort of nursing students will kick off their studies in the new location at 2901 SW 149th Ave., Suite 200. This accelerated program, grounded in GCU's Christian values, is designed to fast-track students through a comprehensive curriculum. By blending innovative online education with in-person lab experiences and immersive simulations, GCU enhances the learning experience while prioritizing patient-centered care.

A pressing issue exists both nationally and locally. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics has projected a 5% increase in the demand for nurses through 2034, exceeding the average growth rate of other occupations. In Florida, it's estimated that the state will need an additional 23,500 registered nurses by 2037, particularly in southern regions where the job market is robust.

Dr. Lisa Smith, the dean of GCU's College of Nursing and Health Care Professions, emphasized this critical need, stating, "GCU is positioned to be part of the solution by preparing nursing graduates at much-needed scale across our nursing sites. To date, GCU offers nursing education at locations across Arizona, Nevada, Utah, Florida, Idaho, Missouri, and New Mexico. Sites in Florida, Idaho, Missouri, and New Mexico are in the early stages of development and have not yet graduated their first cohorts. However, the outcomes from already operational locations, like Arizona and Nevada, highlight GCU's dedication to excellence in nursing education. In 2025, these sites recorded a combined first-time pass rate of 94.66% on the National Council Licensure Exam (NCLEX), significantly exceeding the national average of 86.71%.

The Miramar site, which represents GCU's second accelerated nursing program in Florida, promises to be a well-equipped institution with 22,000 square feet dedicated to classrooms, labs, and simulation suites. This environment is tailored to allow students to hone their critical thinking and clinical skills effectively. Additional amenities include offices and study areas designed to foster student collaboration and success.

GCU is committed to facilitating access to its nursing program by offering course prerequisites online for students with prior college credits or for those pursuing nursing degrees from non-nursing backgrounds. For those eager to enter the program, GCU has structured their admissions process to ensure the needed support along the way, providing opportunities for tutoring, credit transfers, and assistance with clinical placements.

In addition to academic guidance, GCU's support system includes the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN) success team to help students prepare thoroughly for certification.
