Sudan's Local Responders Honored

In a historic moment recognizing the invaluable contributions of local humanitarian responders in Sudan, the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) awarded the Clinton Global Citizen Award to community-based organizations. This significant accolade was presented by President Bill Clinton at the CGI 2026 Annual Meeting in New York, highlighting the critical efforts of these groups during an ongoing humanitarian crisis that has persisted since civil conflict erupted over three years ago.

The award honors local organizations that have provided vital services such as food and education to over 20 million people caught in what is considered the world’s largest humanitarian crisis. Amidst these challenges, community groups have risen to the occasion, delivering essential aid and support.

Funders for Mutual Aid Response

Included in the recognition was ‘Funders for Mutual Aid in Sudan’, an international coalition that has raised over $16 million to support these local humanitarian efforts, with an additional commitment of $5 million aimed at enhancing Sudanese-led recovery and response initiatives. This coalition is coordinated by the Center for Disaster Philanthropy (CDP), which emphasizes the importance of bolstering local services during times of crisis.

“Despite ongoing warfare, local networks like the Emergency Response Rooms have been crucial in sustaining communities. We must advocate for these networks to continue their missions for as long as necessary,” remarked President Clinton during the ceremony.

A Call to Action

Among the award recipients, Hanin Ahmed, a local responder and the founder of the Old Omdurman Emergency Response Rooms, urged global supporters to pay attention to the needs in Sudan, stressing that “Sudan is crying and bleeding. Will you listen and act?” This poignant plea underscores the urgency of support for these frontline responders who are risking their lives to aid their fellow citizens.

The commitment to support the local responders reflects a broader understanding of effective humanitarian assistance: ensuring those closest to the crisis receive the necessary resources and support. Patricia McIlreavy, president and CEO of CDP, acknowledged the unwavering dedication of Sudanese volunteers and their organizations, stating, “This recognition belongs first and foremost to those who have continued their commitment to serve despite extraordinary risks.”

Ongoing Support and Future Goals

Since the onset of civil war in April 2023, Sudan has faced incessant displacement and hunger crises, impacting millions of lives. Currently, more than 20 million individuals are encountering acute hunger, with a staggering 200,000 in a state of famine. In the face of these adversities, local groups comprising neighborhood committees, women’s teams, and youth organizers have rendered life-saving aid, including community kitchens, mental health support, and educational programs.

At this year’s CGI meeting, coalition representatives announced their objective of mobilizing an additional $5 million in flexible funding directed towards enhancing local humanitarian efforts by the end of 2027. McIlreavy stated, “Our role has been about ensuring these leaders obtain the necessary resources and flexibility to persist in their humanitarian work.”

Initiated by the Strengthening Local Humanitarian Leadership Collaborative, which CDP manages, ‘Funders for Mutual Aid in Sudan’ assembles various stakeholders committed to enhancing the capacity of local responders. The coalition had previously surpassed its initial funding goals set during the CGI 2024 Annual Meeting, affirming a collective strength and commitment that has facilitated change despite dire circumstances.

Prominent donors contributing to this coalition include the Broad Reach Fund, Gates Foundation, and several others. These organizations have also offered technical, research, and advocacy support to further the mission of local humanitarian initiatives.
