However, a recent survey conducted in collaboration with WiFi Travel sheds light on some surprising challenges that visitors encounter upon arrival. Despite its allure, many visitors experience unexpected cultural shocks, particularly related to language, tipping customs, and high living costs.

The survey, targeting 300 Japanese adults aged 20 to 59 who have traveled to Hawaii in the past decade, explored their pre-travel concerns, difficulties faced during the trip, communication methods, and their impressions of the local lifestyle. The responses reveal the complexities of vacationing in what many perceive as a familiar foreign land.

Pain Points Always Present

When asked about their anxieties before traveling to Hawaii, around 50% indicated feeling at least some degree of discomfort. Specifically, 19.7% reported being very anxious, and 30.7% somewhat anxious. 49.7% claimed they experienced no anxiety, illustrating that while many are familiar with Hawaii, significant psychological barriers still exist. English language proficiency, tipping customs, and the high cost of living in tourist areas likely contribute to these concerns.

The challenges prominently cited include issues surrounding the tipping culture, communication barriers, and an unfamiliar pace of life, which can become overwhelming, particularly for first-time travelers. The survey results show that 45.1% of respondents experienced instability in their internet connection, making it the most significant point of contention. Also noted were difficulties in understanding the tipping culture (43.4%), an unfamiliarity with the local currency and budget (38.1%), as well as fears related to safety (24.8%).

Currently, the most favored method of communication among travelers remains rental WiFi (43.7%). However, some individuals (15.3%) departed without any preparatory measures for communication, which is particularly concerning given the reliance on smartphones for navigation, translation, and information gathering during their trips.

Those surveyed indicated feeling unprepared for multiple aspects of their travels, most notably concerning their communication strategy (36.0%). Other areas necessitating preparation included payment methods (34.3%), transportation within the locale (30.0%), and even basic English phrases (27.0%). The unique nature of Hawaii's tipping culture — where different service contexts dictate varying amounts — further complicates financial transactions for Japanese visitors who aren't accustomed to such customs.
