Launch of New Subsidy Program for Power Data Utilization
On April 14, 2023, the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) announced the commencement of a new subsidy program titled "Power Data Utilization Support Project." This initiative aims to enhance the efficiency of developing decentralized power systems and promote the deployment of new energy resources through the utilization of smart power meter data.
Key Details of the Subsidy Program
The subsidy program will support demonstration projects and research activities conducted by private and academic institutions that utilize electric power data provided by accredited organizations. Based on the objectives of this initiative, eligible projects may receive up to 120 million yen in funding, which can cover the costs associated with utilizing these data as well as the expenses related to demonstration projects and research.
Objectives of the Project
The primary goal of the Power Data Utilization Support Project is to promote energy efficiency, enhance energy management, and foster innovation in demand response (DR) efforts and the overall digitization of power systems. By leveraging the data, projects aimed at improving energy systems will be classified into two main categories:
1.
Individual Data Utilization Support Project - This involves utilizing individual data from electricity consumers, provided that consent has been obtained.
2.
Statistical Data Utilization Support Project - This involves using statistical data supplied by accredited organizations, including standard and custom statistics.
Application Periods
The application process will commence on April 14, 2023, with the first application round running until May 23, 2023. The expected announcement for subsidy grant decisions is set for June 30, 2023.
A second application round is planned for July 1, 2023, to August 15, 2023, dependent on the outcomes of the first round. Detailed information regarding the second round's implementation will be provided on the dedicated project website during the first round's outcome announcement.
Funding Rates and Caps
Funding will be allocated based on different applicant categories, as outlined below:
- - Private companies and organizations (including SMEs):
- Individual Data Utilization: Up to 60 million yen at a funding rate of 50%.
- Statistical Data Utilization: Up to 30 million yen at a funding rate of 50%.
