80 Teams to Compete in a Rowing Challenge to Support Cancer Survivors

Rowing for a Cause: Million Meter Row Challenge

The Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute is proud to announce the Million Meter Row, an exciting event set for May 9, in Detroit, uniting over 80 teams in a dynamic indoor rowing challenge aimed at raising funds for cancer survivors. In collaboration with Wayne State University School of Medicine and various CrossFit® gyms across the state, this initiative is designed to inspire community participation while supporting a noble cause.

About the Event

Participants are encouraged to form teams for the challenge to collectively meet a massive goal of rowing 2 million meters. The event will unfold at CrossFit in the D, located at 150 Michigan Avenue, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.. Each team aims to complete 25,000 meters as quickly as possible to claim bragging rights, creating a competitive yet supportive atmosphere.

Dr. Jennifer Beebe-Dimmer, a prominent figure at Karmanos, emphasized the significance of this event for participants and the broader community. “This event is exciting, and participants look forward to it each year,” she shared. “With each team's efforts, we are supporting CAPABLE, ensuring cancer survivors the opportunity to learn from CrossFit experts on how they can incorporate this training into their fitness routine.”

The CAPABLE Program: Empowering Cancer Survivors

At the heart of this initiative is the CAPABLE program, an innovative interventional trial established to help cancer survivors meet the exercise recommendations set forth by the American Cancer Society. The ACS advocates for survivors to resume regular physical activity as soon as possible after their diagnosis. Since its inception in 2017, the CAPABLE program has helped countless individuals regain their strength and improve their overall fitness, fostering both physical and mental well-being.

Dr. Beebe-Dimmer elaborated on the transformative impact of exercise post-diagnosis, stating, “We have seen tremendous success with many cancer survivors participating in CAPABLE. Physical activity is crucial for our health, especially after a cancer diagnosis.”

For those interested in signing up for the rowing challenge, teams of five are encouraged to participate, along with individuals who want to contribute to the cause. Each participant is requested to donate $50 to secure their spot in the event and is welcome to engage in fundraising efforts to support the CAPABLE program further.

Throughout the day, attendees can expect an energizing atmosphere complete with a DJ, food trucks, a silent auction, and a raffle. The event not only serves as a platform for raising funds but also as a celebration of community spirit and resilience.
