Ember Infrastructure Invests in Advanced Recycling Technologies for Sustainable Metal Recovery Solutions

In a strategic move aimed at enhancing sustainability in metal recovery, Advanced Recycling Technologies Holdings, LLC, also known as ART, has announced a significant growth investment from funds managed by Ember Infrastructure. This partnership aims to scale ART's advanced metals recovery and recycling platform, which is designed to help various waste stream customers, particularly in the waste-to-energy and metal recycling sectors.

Founded in 2022 by industry veterans Steve Bossotti and Robert Blenden, ART focuses on the design, installation, ownership, and operation of distributed systems that recover and monetize metals directly from various waste streams. Their innovative technology enables upstream asset owners, including waste-to-energy plants and auto shredder residue operations, to realize substantial benefits—both economic and environmental.

ART's recovery systems are strategically co-located at waste stream assets, allowing for the efficient extraction of high-value metals. By integrating these systems, customers can not only reduce the volume of waste they send to landfills but also benefit from the additional revenue generated by recycling these recovered metals. In a time when sustainability is increasingly paramount, ART’s solutions present a viable pathway for reducing carbon emissions associated with the production of virgin metals, achieving up to a 90% reduction in energy consumption compared to traditional mining processes.

The company currently operates three key projects: an auto shredder residue tailings recovery project in the Mid-Atlantic, a waste-to-energy ash recovery initiative in Kent County, Michigan, and a metal recycling operation in Westport, Massachusetts, known as Mid-City Scrap. The latter was acquired as part of the investment from Ember, emphasizing the critical role that these technologies play in promoting a circular economy.

Steve Bossotti, Co-Founder and CEO of ART, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, stating, "Ember brings invaluable specialization to help us expand our proven metals recovery solutions, which ultimately drive efficiency and revenue growth for our customers. The partnership aligns with our mission to further integrate sustainability into metal recovery processes."

Ember Infrastructure is a private equity firm focused on investing in businesses that provide infrastructure solutions aimed at reducing carbon intensity and enhancing resource efficiency. Their investment in ART is indicative of a growing trend where financial backing is increasingly linked to sustainable initiatives, particularly in the waste management and recycling sectors.

Mary Weisskopf, an Ember Partner, noted, "We are thrilled to collaborate with ART to broaden the adoption of their advanced recovery systems, particularly in New England, where the Mid-City Scrap team adds significant local expertise and trust in the brand. ART’s technology has the potential to profoundly impact landfill diversion strategies, especially at our Waste-to-Energy facility in Kent County, which highlights the project's role in increasing recovery rates of valuable metals."

As ART looks to the future, the firm aims to capitalize on the economic and environmental advantages offered by recycled metals. Co-Founder Robert Blenden highlighted that, in addition to the clear environmental benefits, recycled metals are economically advantageous due to lower production costs compared to new materials.

As the demand for sustainable practices rises across industries, ART’s innovations serve as a blueprint for integrating sustainability into waste management and metal recovery practices. The partnership with Ember Infrastructure not only marks a milestone for ART but also underscores the growing recognition of the importance of sustainable resource management. With a commitment to enhancing both profitability and sustainability, ART stands poised to make a significant impact in the recycling sector, contributing to a circular economy that values and preserves our planet's resources.

Through its ongoing efforts, Advanced Recycling Technologies illustrates how technology and collaboration can drive significant advancements in waste management and resource recovery. The firm looks forward to deploying its systems to more locations, thereby maximizing the recovery of metals from waste and furthering its mission of promoting sustainability through innovation.
