As we stand at the brink of what many are dubbing a data center boom in the United States, particularly in Virginia, the demand for energy is at an unprecedented high. Local power company Dominion Energy has reported that the peak power demand from data centers reached around 4 GW by 2025. At the same time, requests for new connections are coming in from AI and cloud service companies, with requirements soaring to several tens of GW. However, the challenges are mounting, with shortages in power generation facilities, transmission lines, substations, transformers, land availability, and skilled workforce. Consequently, power companies are unable to specify connection timelines for all projects. Measures such as introducing dedicated rates for data centers and requiring deposits or long-term contracts from operators are now on the table.

Sakaguchi will also participate in the "U.S. Virginia Data Center Supply Chain Investment Business Mission" organized by JETRO in August 2026. This mission will include visits to local areas like Richmond, Loudoun County, and Alexandria, where he will engage with stakeholders including local power companies, state government officials, data center-related firms, and energy companies, as well as institutions like George Mason University's FUSE Center. This would enable him to gather firsthand insights into the realities of the world's largest market.
