FinDev Canada's Major Investment Aims to Boost Financial Inclusion and Climate Action in Côte d'Ivoire
Boosting Financial Inclusion in Côte d'Ivoire: A Landmark Investment from FinDev Canada
In a significant move to advance financial inclusion and climate action in Côte d'Ivoire, FinDev Canada, the country's bilateral development finance institution, has signed a EUR 40 million loan agreement with NSIA Banque Côte d'Ivoire S.A., one of the leading commercial banks in the region. This investment is not only FinDev Canada's first direct involvement in Côte d'Ivoire but also a vital step towards enhancing economic prosperity and ensuring shared growth between Canada and Côte d'Ivoire.
With this loan forming part of a larger EUR 100 million syndicated facility led by Citibank, the funds will specifically target underserved populations, including small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and businesses led by women. Recognizing the multiple barriers that SMEs face in Côte d'Ivoire, this partnership aims to empower these enterprises, which are pivotal to the local economy. FinDev Canada’s initiative will see 50% of the loan proceeds allocated specifically for SMEs, with an additional 30% earmarked for women-owned or led SMEs.
Addressing Climate Change
As Côte d'Ivoire grapples with the adverse effects of climate change, which disrupt agricultural productivity and threaten food security, the need for sustainable financial solutions has never been greater. The nation is expected to require around USD 10 billion for climate mitigation efforts to fulfill its Nationally Determined Contributions as outlined in international agreements. The remaining allocation from the loan will thus concentrate on climate finance, focusing on renewable energy projects and initiatives designed to enhance energy efficiency across various sectors.
NSIA Banque Côte d'Ivoire plans to channel these funds into loans for photovoltaic projects across commercial, industrial, and office domains, contributing significantly to the country's transition towards a greener economy.
Collaborative Effort for Development
According to Lori Kerr, CEO of FinDev Canada, this investment symbolizes how their organization partners with prominent financial institutions to facilitate meaningful capital flow into priority markets. By enhancing access to finance for SMEs and women entrepreneurs, along with bolstering climate investments, this collaboration aims to strengthen Canada’s long-term relationships within Africa.
Anita Anand, Canada’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, highlighted the country’s dedication to fostering inclusive and sustainable economic growth through this investment. She emphasized that support for small businesses, particularly those led by women, is crucial in addressing climate issues while promoting shared prosperity.
Léonce Yacé, the CEO of NSIA Banque, remarked that this partnership represents a significant achievement in their mission to promote sustainable growth and entrepreneurship in Côte d'Ivoire. With these resources, NSIA is committed to empowering local enterprises that drive value and shape the nation’s future.
Citi also expressed pride in leading this significant transaction. Pape Sall, the Head of Citi West Central Africa, noted the importance of such partnerships in building a more robust financial ecosystem within the region.
KEXIM Global (Singapore) Ltd. joined this financing effort to support sustainable agricultural development and broader social infrastructure growth across the region, further emphasizing the collaborative nature of this initiative.
In conclusion, FinDev Canada's EUR 40 million investment in NSIA Banque Côte d'Ivoire marks a crucial step toward enhancing financial inclusivity and promoting climate-conscious efforts within the country. This partnership not only reinforces the importance of investing in underserved communities but also serves as a beacon of collaborative development that seeks to inspire similar initiatives in emerging markets around the globe.
