Revolutionary Robot Toothbrush 'g.eN' Raises Funds for Mass Production at Waseda University

Introducing 'g.eN': A Next-Gen Robot Toothbrush

In a groundbreaking move that could redefine oral hygiene, Genics, a startup born from Waseda University's robotics laboratory, has initiated a crowdfunding project aimed at mass-producing its revolutionary robot toothbrush, 'g.eN'. This initiative will launch on December 2, 2025, through the crowdfunding platform Kibidango.

Features of g.eN

Fully Automated Brushing

Imagine a toothbrush that does the work for you. The g.eN is designed with multiple brushes set at ideal angles, powered by compact electric motors that independently navigate your dental arch. It effectively cleans both the cheek and tongue sides of teeth simultaneously, ensuring a comprehensive cleaning experience from various angles.

Scientifically Proven Cleaning Efficacy

Research presented at the 2022 Japan Healthcare Dental Science Association reported that the g.eN toothbrush maintained an average plaque retention rate of just 22.4%, well within the range deemed 'good' for oral hygiene. This confirms that the g.eN can provide cleaning efficiency equivalent to or even better than traditional brushing, without any manual effort.

Proprietary Patented Technology

Unlike conventional mouthpiece electric toothbrushes, the g.eN employs a novel method involving multiple brushes that move and rotate around the teeth to remove plaque. Genics has secured two patents for this innovative approach (Patent 6511579 and Patent 7303124).

Meeting Diverse Needs

The g.eN is designed to cater to a wide array of users, from busy professionals to children and elderly individuals who may struggle with traditional toothbrushes. The product even features optional parts to support oral development.

Three Major Enhancements in the New Model

The new model to be introduced through this crowdfunding effort includes significant improvements:
  • - Compact & Lightweight Design: The toothbrush now fits comfortably in typical bathroom storage spaces and features a refreshed design that integrates seamlessly into daily life.
  • - Optimized Pricing: With established mass-production capabilities, the g.eN will be priced competitively with the higher-end models of conventional electric toothbrushes, making it a viable choice for a broader audience.
  • - Expanded Sales Channels: Starting in 2026, the g.eN will be available not only through medical institutions and direct sales but also through regular retailers, broadening accessibility.

Background of Development

The journey of innovation for the g.eN began with a simple question posed by Genics’ founder, Gen Sakata: 'Can we change the way we brush our teeth with robotics?'. This inquiry led to the genesis of the project during Sakata's time as a graduate student at Waseda University in 2015. Encountering his own challenges with traditional tooth brushing motivated him to seek new solutions, leading to the formation of Genics in 2018.

Since its debut at CES 2019 in Las Vegas—one of the largest consumer electronics shows—the g.eN has drawn considerable attention and undergone extensive collaboration with medical institutions. Over 200 units of the initial model have been implemented in practice, and after ten years of development, Genics is ready to scale up production.

Comments from Genics CEO Gen Sakata

Over the past decade, we have remained committed to the fundamental goal of ensuring 'thorough cleaning' while evolving our product to be accessible to more people. The early models were handcrafted and primarily available through medical facilities and direct sales. However, with our technological advancements and production expertise, we are finally prepared to enter the mass-production stage.

This shift from 'a special product for a select few' to 'an option available for everyone' is what we aim to achieve with your support. Together, let’s build a future where everyone can freely choose the oral care solutions that best suit them.

Gen Sakata's Profile

Gen Sakata has completed his coursework at the Waseda University Graduate School of Advanced Science and Engineering. As a robotics engineer, he has served as a 'Entrepreneurship Promotion Ambassador' appointed by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. He was also a participant in the fourth cohort of the Tobitate! Japan Study Abroad Program, interning for a year at AMS in Austria.

In 2018, he founded Genics while also enrolling in graduate school. The g.eN was first unveiled at CES 2019 in Las Vegas. He continues to act as a special lecturer in Tokyo's educational entrepreneurship programs for middle and elementary school students.

Future Developments

Following the crowdfunding phase, plans are in place to begin selling in general retailers by 2026. Genics will also continue to deepen partnerships with healthcare providers and welfare facilities to offer high-quality oral care to a wider range of users.
