BayCare Health System Appoints Nicole Johanson to Lead Women's Medical Group

BayCare Health System Appoints Nicole Johanson

BayCare Health System has officially announced the appointment of Nicole (Nikki) Johanson as the inaugural Vice President and Chief Operating Officer for its newly established BayCare Women's Medical Group. This strategic move comes as part of BayCare's ongoing commitment to advancing women's health and the enhancement of maternity services in the region. Johanson commenced her role on March 30, 2026, and she is set to lead the operations and development of this dedicated medical group.

The formation of the BayCare Women's Medical Group distinguishes itself from BayCare Medical Group, the largest multispecialty physician group in West Central Florida. With this new structure, BayCare can create a more focused physician model that is tailored to strengthen relationships with women’s health specialists across the area. Last year, BayCare hospitals reported 13,255 births, reinforcing their position as the top provider of maternity services in West Central Florida.

Kimberly Guy, BayCare’s Chief Operating Officer, expressed her enthusiasm about Johanson’s appointment, stating, “Nikki is a proven leader with the experience and expertise to build this team and strengthen our existing relationships with community providers. We are excited to have her join us in providing high-quality, compassionate care for the women of West Central Florida through comprehensive health services.”

With Johanson at the helm, the BayCare Women's Medical Group will work to integrate comprehensive services, ensuring that they adequately address the full spectrum of women’s health needs. This group will complement the efforts of the BayCare Women's Institute, which coordinates several women’s health services throughout the extensive BayCare system. The collaboration of these two entities will enhance both clinical and operational strategies, promoting better outcomes for women throughout various stages of life.

Johanson brings to this position over 23 years of experience in healthcare, with 17 of those years dedicated to leadership roles in multi-site operations. Her impressive resume includes positions such as the President and COO of Growth Orthopedics and Regional Vice President of Operations for Surgical Care Affiliates in Florida. Additionally, she has held multiple leadership positions within the Laser Spine Institute, demonstrating her comprehensive knowledge of healthcare operations and her ability to drive positive change within organizations.

In her own words, Johanson expressed her honor in joining BayCare, stating, “I’m honored to join an organization that makes such a meaningful difference in our community. I look forward to partnering with this talented team to build a women's health medical group centered on high-quality, accessible care.”

Johanson holds an MSN and an MBA in Healthcare from the University of Phoenix, along with a BSN from Valparaiso University and a BS in Exercise Science from Ball State University. Furthermore, she is an active member of the American College of Healthcare Executives, indicating her commitment to ongoing professional development within the field.

BayCare itself is a major non-profit academic health care system serving both individuals and families across 16 hospitals and numerous other facilities throughout Florida's Tampa Bay area. It is the largest provider of pediatric and behavioral health services in West Central Florida, providing a diverse range of ambulatory services, including surgical centers, urgent care facilities, wellness centers, and home care services through BayCare HomeCare. BayCare’s mission is clear: to enhance the health of those it serves by delivering community-owned health care services that exemplify high-quality and compassionate care.
