Global Aesthetics Report Reveals Surge in Facial Surgeries with Eyelid Procedures Leading the Way
Global Aesthetics Report: Between 2023 and 2024, Facial Surgeries Surge
The International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS) recently unveiled the findings of its Global Survey on Aesthetic/Cosmetic Procedures at the ISAPS Olympiad World Congress held in Singapore. This comprehensive report highlights a momentous trend in the field of aesthetics: a dramatic shift toward more facial surgeries, notably eyelid procedures leading the pack.
In 2024, global aesthetic procedures are projected to approach a staggering 38 million, comprising over 17.4 million surgical procedures and 20.5 million non-surgical interventions. This marks an impressive 42.5% increase compared to prior years. Among these, eyelid surgery has emerged as the most frequently performed surgical procedure, dethroning liposuction for the first time, with about 2.1 million surgeries conducted.
Eyelid Surgery: A Rising Star
Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, has not only surged in popularity, reflecting a growing consumer interest in facial rejuvenation, but it also showcases the evolving standards of beauty and self-perception in today's society. Following eyelid surgery in frequency are liposuction, breast augmentation, scar revision, and rhinoplasty.
Non-surgical options have also seen substantial growth, with botulinum toxin injections (commonly known as Botox) remaining the leading procedure worldwide, now standing at 7.8 million treatments. Hyaluronic acid fillers have similarly climbed by 5.2%, achieving about 7.8 million procedures.
Trends Affecting Aesthetic Procedures
While the report illustrates exciting growth in aesthetic surgeries, it also sheds light on the significant shifts in demographic trends. A notable majority of breast augmentations, rhinoplasties, and external genital surgeries (about 54%, 60.1%, and 48.4% respectively) were performed on individuals aged 18 to 34 years. In contrast, the popularity of botulinum toxin procedures was predominantly among individuals aged 35 to 50 years (47% of the total).
The allure of facial aesthetics has become a central theme across various age groups. Eyelid surgery, for instance, has seen significant uptake among men, following closely after gynecomastia surgery and scar revisions.
Furthermore, it’s quite noteworthy that America continues to lead in the realm of aesthetic surgeries, executing a remarkable total of over 6.1 million procedures in 2024. Brazil follows closely with 3.1 million, particularly excelling in surgical interventions. Japan rounds up the top three countries, underscoring the global reach of aesthetic surgeries.
Perspective from ISAPS
Dr. Amin Kalaaji, the Chair of the ISAPS Global Survey Committee and a noted plastic surgeon from Norway, commented on these dynamic shifts: “Our report now includes data on popular procedures such as 'Mommy Makeovers,' combined surgeries, and various innovative interventions like hand rejuvenation through fat grafting and correction of inverted nipples.”
The compelling data from this year's report serves to highlight the rapidly evolving landscape of aesthetic procedures, reflecting societal shifts towards more prominent facial aesthetics. With the growing acceptance of these procedures, many are altering how they perceive themselves and, in turn, choose to enhance their appearances.
Conclusion
As cultural perceptions of beauty continue to evolve alongside technological advancements in surgical techniques, the cosmetic industry is expected to keep re-shaping itself. Clearly, the trends highlighted in ISAPS's latest findings paint a vivid picture of a world increasingly inclined towards cosmetic interventions. With eyelid surgery now on top, it will be interesting to see how these trends develop and adapt in the future.
