Dive Into the World of Traditional Crafts in Toshima This Summer

Every summer, residents and visitors to the Toshima area have the unique opportunity to engage with their local heritage through traditional crafts. This August, from the 2nd to the 4th, the Toshima Industry Promotion Plaza (IKE·Biz) will host the Summer Traditional Crafts Workshops.

Expanding Opportunities for All Ages

For the first time in its history, this event will welcome not only elementary and middle school students but also adults, reflecting the community’s enthusiasm for craft learning. The initiative aims to foster an appreciation for the rich traditions of Toshima while creating lasting summer memories forparticipants of all ages. Indeed, as the program expanded, so too did the number of workshops available, providing even more chances to learn from skilled artisans.

Meet the Experts

One of the highlights of this year’s workshops is the opportunity to learn from notable craftsmen, including Kōshi Shima, a recipient of the Yellow Ribbon Medal for his excellence in crafting precious metal accessories. He will be joined by six other artisans, all respected members of the Toshima Traditional Craft Preservation Society, ready to share their secrets and skills with participants.

A Variety of Crafting Experiences

Participants can look forward to a wide range of hands-on activities:
  • - Precious Metal Accessories: Craft a silver plaque or ring.
  • - Tokyo Shamisen: Create a pendant using shamisen materials and enjoy a hands-on experience with this traditional string instrument.
  • - Tokyo Hand-Painted Yuzen: Try your hand at yuzen dyeing on a cotton handkerchief.
  • - Metalworking: Design a donut pendant from copper, which doubles as a glasses holder!
