New MOF Bench Showcases Sustainable Design at Osaka Expo 2025

Honoring Sustainability at Osaka 2025

The MOF Bench, a pioneering public seating solution that captures CO₂, is now a prominent feature at the Osaka-Kansai Expo. Developed through a collaboration among ExtraBold Co., SyncMOF, and Sogo Kagu Fabrication Co., this innovative piece symbolizes the potential to merge design with sustainability. The bench serves not just as furniture but as an environmental message.-

A Journey from Concept to Reality

ExtraBold, which operates the BOLDGYM ACADEMY, has been a catalyst for various communal initiatives. The MOF Bench was born from this community where interdisciplinary teams worked closely to materialize the project. The inspiration came from Professor Tomoaki Kageyama of Nagoya City University, whose artistic vision led to a design imitating plant leaves. The bench features veins that are embedded with blue MOF (Metal-Organic Framework) developed by SyncMOF, effectively capturing CO₂ from the atmosphere.

The design is intentional; it directs the absorbed CO₂ to the center of the bench where a ‘Future Fruit’ is placed. This ‘fruit’ represents a future plant designed to convert CO₂ into energy, aligning beautifully with the project’s vision of a carbon-neutral society.

Rapid Development Through Collaboration

The collaborative effort across the companies was outstanding; the entire cycle from design to testing and production was completed in just about one month. ExtraBold managed project logistics while also developing a resin material mixed with the MOF. It was through Sogo Kagu’s expertise that the design was realized into a tangible product.

Thanks to ExtraBold's advanced 3D printer, the EXF-12, complex surface structures were produced with remarkable precision and quality. The transparent resin used features a beautiful layering effect and is made from sustainable, non-petrochemical materials. This project stands as a model of how creativity, speed, and quality can intertwine in future collaborative endeavors.

A Call for Sustainable Initiatives

SyncMOF participated in this initiative as a material member of BOLDGYM ACADEMY, showcasing their commitment to environmental sustainability. Additionally, staff from Sogo Kagu had previously participated in training offered through BOLDGYM to utilize the EXF-12 printer, ensuring a well-rounded skillset in modern manufacturing techniques.

ExtraBold is passionate about continuing similar projects that address environmental issues and create impactful collaborations. They are currently inviting new corporate members to join BOLDGYM ACADEMY, aiming to foster innovations like the MOF Bench.

Visit the MOF Bench

You can find the MOF Bench at the 2nd floor of the Osaka Health Pavilion during the expo, situated right in front of the SyncMOF booth. It remains a permanent installation throughout the exhibition, providing a resting place for guests while also serving as an educational piece on sustainability.
