A Spotlight on A Chorus Line's Special Performance in Japan

The renowned musical, A Chorus Line, acclaimed with nine Tony Awards and a Pulitzer Prize, is making its way to Japan with a special production set to premiere in September 2025. The show will run from September 8 to September 22, 2025, at the Tokyo Building Brillia Hall in Ikebukuro, Tokyo. This much-anticipated event is organized by TBS, Yomiuri Newspaper, Pia, Lawson Entertainment, and tsp, promising an unforgettable theatrical experience.

A recent interview with Adam Cooper, who takes on the pivotal role of director Zach, has been published in the theater information magazine Confetti. Fans eager to catch the show can purchase tickets at an exclusive price through Confetti, a service operated by Long Run Planning, based in Shinjuku, Tokyo.

About Adam Cooper

Born in 1971 in London, England, Adam Cooper is an award-winning performer known for his exceptional career as a dancer. He was a member of the Royal Ballet from 1989 to 1997, earning the title of principal dancer in 1994. His standout performance as the lead in Matthew Bourne's Swan Lake in 1995 captured global attention, leading to multiple accolades including a nomination for the Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical in 1999. Beyond dancing, Cooper continues to contribute to the arts as a choreographer, director, and writer, with a notable following in Japan. His previous appearances in Japanese productions include works like Swan Lake, Dangerous Liaisons, Singin' in the Rain, and Soldier's Tale.

The Musical's New Production

This modern reinterpretation of A Chorus Line had its world premiere in December 2021 at the Curve Theatre in Leicester, UK. Under the direction of Nikolai Foster, this new version features Cooper as Zach and has garnered rave reviews. With its vibrant choreography and emotionally resonant storytelling, the production shines a spotlight on the lives of aspiring dancers, bringing forth their struggles and aspirations.

With the current economic climate making travel to Broadway or West End productions more challenging, the upcoming performance of A Chorus Line in Japan offers a rare opportunity to witness a top-tier international musical without leaving the country. This will be the second collaboration since the acclaimed visit of Cooper's Jonathan Church Production, following the successful arrival of Singin' in the Rain in 2022.

The Story Unfolds

Set in New York City during auditions for a new musical, the narrative unfolds with 17 dancers remaining in the final round. A single white line stretches across the stage, representing the divide between success and failure. The director, Zach, presents the final assignment: to speak about themselves. As they each share their unique stories, the auditionees reveal their life experiences, showcasing their individual journeys. Among them is Kathy, who has a romantic history with Zach and is returning for another chance at her dreams.
