In a strategic move to revolutionize the industrial waste sector, SKF has announced an important investment in startup Anferra AB. Joining forces with Stephen Industries and Chalmers Ventures, SKF aims to address the longstanding waste issue related to hazardous steel grinding sludge. This innovative partnership reflects a shared commitment to sustainability and the transition towards a circular economy.

Understanding the Challenge of Grinding Sludge



Steel grinding sludge is a by-product of metal grinding processes, consisting of a mixture of metal particles, abrasives, and contaminated grinding emulsions. Currently categorized as hazardous waste, the treatment of grinding sludge poses significant environmental challenges, with around 12 million tonnes produced globally each year. Most of this waste is typically dealt with through incineration or sent to landfills, leading to both environmental risks and high disposal costs for businesses.

The primary challenge lies in the variability of sludge composition, making standardized recycling efforts difficult. This is where Anferra's innovative approach comes into play.

Anferra's Innovative Recycling Process



Anferra has developed a groundbreaking technology that repurposes steel grinding sludge into valuable resources. The process transforms the sludge into ferric chloride, a common chemical used in wastewater treatment, and produces hydrogen gas, which can serve as a clean energy source. Remarkably, the transformation process offers substantial climate benefits, with a potential reduction of up to 470 kg CO₂-equivalents per tonne—equivalent to driving an electric vehicle for approximately 7,500 km.

This innovative method achieves an impressive recovery rate of up to 90% of iron from the sludge while significantly reducing energy consumption. Therefore, instead of treating grinding sludge as a waste product, it can now be viewed as a secondary raw material, aligning perfectly with the EU's initiatives to standardize waste regulations and foster a robust market for recycled materials.
