Lightning-Fast Delivery of MikroSAR Satellite to Polish Armed Forces by ICEYE

A Milestone in Satellite Deployment: MikroSAR for Poland

In a remarkable achievement for both the aerospace and defense industries, ICEYE, a leading company in sovereign space intelligence, has successfully delivered the MikroSAR, Poland's radar reconnaissance satellite system, to the Polish Armed Forces in less than 12 months. This groundbreaking accomplishment underscores the potential for rapid deployment of military satellite capabilities, positioning Poland among a distinct group of nations with sovereign space intelligence.

The handover, which took place on May 15, 2026, is noted not only for its speed but also for being the fastest operational satellite program deployment in the world to date. This event marks a significant advancement in Poland's military capabilities, enhancing its intelligence-gathering capacity from space. The evolution from contract signing to operational status has set a new global benchmark, showcasing how countries can effectively establish their own satellite systems tailored to their specific security needs.

Upon signing the contract for approximately €200 million in May 2025, ICEYE went into high gear, building and launching four synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellites. Incredibly, the program's baseline scope involving three satellites was fulfilled just ten months after the signing. With the Polish military now fully trained and adept in operating the satellite constellation independently, the initiative demonstrates a successful collaboration between ICEYE and the Wojskowe Zakłady Łączności Nr 1 S.A., which provided vital ground infrastructure.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence, Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, emphasized that the handover marks a pivotal step toward enhancing Poland’s capabilities in modern intelligence-gathering technologies. He noted that the satellite system provides strategic value, ensuring data reliability regardless of weather conditions or time of day.

The MikroSAR system allows Polish military operators to execute comprehensive reconnaissance missions with high precision. By utilizing microwave pulses, each satellite can generate detailed images, achieving resolution as fine as 25 cm. The functionalities of the system range from wide-area surveillance—essential for monitoring border security and maritime zones—to pinpoint imaging of areas of particular interest, thereby granting military commanders invaluable situational awareness that is critical for strategic and tactical operations.

Operating under an entity named ARGUS, which was established specifically for this purpose by the Ministry of National Defence in 2024, the satellite system was aptly named POLSARIS, reflecting both its function and a cultural nod to Polish literature. This name was selected through an open competition in 2025, highlighting the community's engagement in shaping national defense strategies.

Colonel Leszek Paszkowski, head of the ARGUS agency, pointed out that the integration of the MikroSAR system is not merely a technological leap but also a vital enhancement of the Polish Armed Forces' command and operational frameworks. Access to independent, reliable radar imagery equips Poland to better plan and respond to rapidly changing security conditions on the global stage.

ICEYE's capabilities are significant not only for defense; they extend into vital areas such as environmental monitoring and disaster management. As the proprietor of the world's largest SAR satellite constellation, ICEYE continues to provide unmatched intelligence quality, latency, and revisit times. The company's mission is clear—enabling swift decision-making processes that contribute to global safety.

With a growing workforce of over 1,000 employees across several countries, including Poland, Spain, the UK, and the US, ICEYE stands out as a beacon of innovation in the aerospace sector. The rapid deployment of the MikroSAR system for the Polish Armed Forces embodies a forward-thinking approach to national security, significantly enhancing Poland's military capabilities. As ICEYE progresses, their work sets the standard for the integration of cutting-edge technologies into sovereign military operations.
