Rheinmetall and ICEYE Collaboration: A Major Leap in Space Reconnaissance for German Armed Forces

Rheinmetall and ICEYE have joined forces to undertake a groundbreaking initiative in the realm of space reconnaissance, marked by a substantial contract awarded by the German Armed Forces. With a total value of approximately €1.7 billion, this pivotal agreement is set to bolster Germany’s defense capabilities through the provision of space-based reconnaissance data.

The collaboration established the Rheinmetall ICEYE Space Solutions joint venture, geared towards delivering high volumes of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery. Located in Neuss, this entity will harness ICEYE’s expertise as the leading satellite manufacturer and operator in SAR technology. This partnership aims to provide the German military with exclusive access to a satellite constellation designed for enhanced operational surveillance, addressing the evolving landscape of military reconnaissance needs.

Armin Papperger, CEO of Rheinmetall AG, expressed profound gratitude towards the Bundeswehr for their confidence in the capabilities of modern space technology, emphasizing the indispensable role that access to space-based data plays for contemporary military forces. He articulated, "Modern armed forces depend on control over space-based reconnaissance and communications to fulfill their missions effectively. Adding further to this sentiment, Rafal Modrzewski, CEO and co-founder of ICEYE, highlighted the significance of the contract for not just Germany, but for the overall security of Europe. He noted that space-based intelligence has evolved from a strategic novelty to a vital tactical tool. Modrzewski asserted, "Our mission is to advance a shift from isolated, vulnerable systems to resilient constellations capable of providing timely and actionable insights. This landmark agreement illustrates ICEYE's growth from a New Space pioneer to a premier provider of mission-critical capabilities."

The operational timeline of the contract extends from late 2025 to 2030, with provisions for further extensions. Within this period, Rheinmetall ICEYE Space Solutions will be responsible for supplying a significant number of satellite images daily. The manufacturing of the SAR satellites has been set to commence in Q3 of 2026, marking an exciting phase for the joint venture.

The project, referred to internally as 'SPOCK 1' (SAR Space System for Persistent Operational Tracking Stage 1), specializes in utilizing SAR technology to capture detailed images irrespective of weather conditions, thereby ensuring continuous and reliable surveillance capabilities. The satellites will collect data from orbits between 500 and 600 kilometers above the Earth, utilizing radar pulses to construct intricate imagery of ground situations.

One of the standout features of SAR technology lies in its ability to operate effectively in poor visibility conditions, be it due to clouds, smoke, or storms. This ensures round-the-clock operational readiness and a more flexible, timely response to fast-paced scenarios. Furthermore, SAR satellites possess the unique capability to detect minute changes on the Earth's surface that might go unnoticed by conventional optical systems, achieving image resolutions up to 16 cm.
