Hotel Sunroute Plaza Shinjuku Accelerates Environmental Initiatives to Become a Hotel of Choice Globally

Hotel Sunroute Plaza Shinjuku's Environmental Commitment: A Model for Sustainable Hospitality

Hotel Sunroute Plaza Shinjuku is making strides to become a leader in sustainable hospitality, aiming to be selected by guests from around the world. Starting from October 1, 2025, the hotel will implement a new initiative designed to reduce environmental impact and enhance guest convenience through the introduction of the "Recycling Box". This new program will collect clothing and similar items directly from guests, offering a unique opportunity to contribute to sustainability while enjoying a stay.

Understanding the Problem

In recent years, Japan has seen a staggering annual waste of approximately 1.6 billion pieces of clothing, amounting to about 500,000 tons. The majority of this waste ends up in incineration or landfills, making the apparel industry the second-largest CO2 emitter globally. Thus, there is a pressing need for waste reduction and the promotion of circular utilization within this sector. The hotel industry, too, is increasingly expected to take serious action towards minimizing environmental burdens.

Against this backdrop, FASHION X, a Tokyo-based company, has joined hands with Sotetsu Hotel Management, which operates the Sunroute Hotels, to forge a system that allows guests to engage in environmental activities during their hotel stay. Just by depositing unwanted clothing and small items into a specially designated Recycling Box upon checkout, guests can easily participate in reuse and recycling.

The Recycling Box Initiative

The Recycling Box will be strategically placed within the hotel, complete with clear visual instructions to ensure it is accessible to all guests, including those visiting from abroad. This careful design approach ensures everyone can participate without confusion. By enabling guests to lighten their luggage and experience a sense of social contribution, the program enriches the value of their stay.

Expected Outcomes

The initiative has two key anticipated effects:
1. Enhanced Guest Experience: Guests will appreciate lighter bags and feel a genuine sense of contribution to social welfare.
2. Environmental Benefits: The program aims to reduce clothing waste, decrease CO2 emissions, and promote resource circulation.

Both FASHION X and Sotetsu Hotel Management are committed to furthering sustainability while continually innovating the hotel experience for all guests.
