Introduction
On November 5, 2026, MetLife, Inc. (NYSE: MET) announced the appointment of Omar Slim as the Head of MetLife Investment Management (MIM) Japan, effective December 1, 2026. Based in Tokyo, Slim's primary responsibility will include setting the overall direction for MIM's business in Japan and driving its strategic expansion, all under the guidance of Kirk Sweeney, the Head of the Asia-Pacific region.
Slim’s Background and Role
As Slim undertakes this crucial role, he will continue to serve as the Co-Head of Asia Public Fixed Income, working alongside Tim Levy, the Head of Public Fixed Income. Levy expressed his confidence in Slim's vast leadership experience and operational expertise, noting that they will significantly enhance MIM's established bond management capabilities. In an increasingly important market, they aim to deliver more investment opportunities to global clients.
Kirk Sweeney emphasized MIM's commitment to positioning Japan as a vital pillar of its Asia-Pacific business. He expressed his belief in Slim's strong leadership to accelerate the growth of their asset management operations in Japan, building upon their past achievements.
Strategic Vision
Omar Slim shared his enthusiasm about stepping into this pivotal role at a time when MIM's Japanese operations are poised for significant growth. He highlighted the numerous opportunities within the Japanese market as it continues to expand as a global asset management hub. Slim expressed his eagerness to collaborate with the team to deepen partnerships with clients and strengthen their presence and operational framework within Japan.
Slim will co-lead the Asia Public Fixed Income team from Tokyo in collaboration with Andy Suen, who is based in Hong Kong. They will continue to implement investment strategies across global and Asian credit, interest rates, and foreign exchange markets, which have garnered recognition as industry-leading by various valuation agencies.
Previous Experience
Before joining MIM, Slim worked at State Street Global Advisors and BNP Paribas Corporate & Investment Banking. He holds a Master of Science in Finance from Boston College Carroll School of Management and is a CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst) charterholder.
With this transition, Slim is relocating from Singapore to Tokyo. MIM's Singapore office, established in 1996, will remain a crucial hub for supporting clients throughout Southeast Asia.
Leadership Changes
In addition, Slim is set to become the representative director of both MetLife Investment Management Japan and PineBridge Investments. Komei Asaba, the Head of the Japanese Client Group, will also take on the role of representative director for both firms.
