Okayama University Hosts 3D Printing Workshop for High School Students
In an exciting collaboration, Okayama University has come together with Okayama Hosen High School to conduct a comprehensive workshop aimed at enhancing students' capabilities in 3D printing technology. This initiative is part of the university's ongoing efforts to support advanced educational practices in regional high schools.
On August 14, 2026, a total of 35 students from Okayama Hosen High School participated in the foundational level of the "3D Printing Course" as part of a broader digital transformation initiative called DX High School. The purpose of this course is to promote inquiry-based learning and reinforce information education through the application of cutting-edge ICT technologies.
Behind this initiative is a robust partnership that leverages the resources of Okayama University, noted for its innovative teaching methods, and Okayama Hosen High School, recognized as a "Model School for ICT Education". The school's initiative includes providing each student with an iPad, which has furthered their digital learning endeavors. The specialized technical support from university staff and students enhances the depth of inquiry-based learning.
This year, the workshop shifted its focus from understanding the hardware of 3D printers to fostering practical applications of digital technology. Participants engaged heartily with the equipment, using three 3D printers while learning to operate advanced CAD software, Autodesk Fusion. This software enables students to swiftly transform their creativity into physical prototypes, embodying the rapid prototyping concept.
The planning and implementation of this program were spearheaded by a team from MOSAdemy, a venture led by Okayama University graduate student Yuya Shimizu, who is currently in his third year of a PhD program in Environmental Life Sciences. The team, comprising both undergraduate and graduate students from the university, aims to expand the reach of manufacturing enjoyment by introducing children to robots and 3D printing experiences in educational contexts.
To ensure a sustainable mentoring system, a dedicated guidance approach was adopted. Aiina Hirai, a second-year master’s student, took the lead in mentoring during the workshop, under Shimizu’s supervision. The aim is to empower students to see 3D printing not merely as a tool to observe but as a means to actualize their ideas creatively.
Pupils were assigned to design and create a lightweight but sturdy structure, specifically a "bridge", for the upcoming application workshop scheduled for July 25. As they embark on the journey of designing their bridge, they are expected to enhance their engineering mindset and proactive inquiry skills. This hands-on experience aims to foster collaboration among students, encouraging them to bring their digital ideas to life.
In the following application workshop, students’ bridges will be tested with sensors to collect data on load capacity and structural evaluations. Through this practical examination, students will gain hands-on experience of the digital transformation process in manufacturing—from design to verification—addressing challenges detected from data analysis and predictions.
