NABLAS and NTT East Develop Technology to Combat Misinformation

Addressing Misinformation with Innovative Technology

NABLAS, a cutting-edge AI venture globally recognized and partnering with NTT East, is embarking on an ambitious project to tackle the rising threat of misinformation in our digital age. Supported by Japan's Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, this initiative, known as the consortium project for enhancing fake voice detection and comprehensive misinformation strategies for local governments, is set to commence on August 25, 2025.

Background and Objectives

As AI-generated content surges, the capability of anybody to create realistic images, videos, and audio has inevitably led to the rise of misinformation. The spread of false information and sophisticated scams, especially through AI-derived fake voices—such as impersonation calls—poses grave social challenges. Unlike traditional scams, these modern tactics are increasingly difficult to detect, tricking victims into genuine belief.

Experiencing a rise in misinformation spread via social media and video sharing platforms risks creating disarray in critical areas like government, economy, and disaster response. Therefore, it has become imperative to develop reliable systems capable of discerning truth from falsehood while implementing technologies to maintain information integrity. NABLAS and NTT East aim to front this battle by developing robust methods to detect fake audio in telephone environments and establishing preventive systems against misinformation targeting local municipalities.

Implementation Details

1. Development and Testing of Telephone Voice Fake Detection Technology

  • - High Precision Detection: The project aims to create a state-of-the-art fake voice detection technology tailored for telecommunication environments, ensuring stable performance regardless of audio format or quality.
  • - Practical Validation: Developed technology will be integrated into telephone applications, allowing real-world testing where synthesized audio will be scrutinized under various formal conditions to evaluate detection capabilities.

2. Comprehensive Misinformation Strategy for Local Governments

  • - Assured Reliability: A key element will include the development of decentralized identifier (DID) and verifiable credential (VC) technologies that ascertain the authenticity of information sources.
  • - Visual Fraud Detection: Technologies designed to identify fake images and videos will be established, complemented by electronic watermarking techniques for verifying any alterations during dissemination. An AI fact-checking agent will autonomously evaluate information reliability against established databases.
  • - Field Trials: Initial implementations are slated for testing in Ina City, Nagano Prefecture, with the aim of refining these systems.

Consortium Partners' Roles

NABLAS

  • - Project Management: Overseeing the execution of the initiative.
  • - Development of Voice Detection Systems: Focusing on innovative fake voice detection methodologies and related technologies for image and video.

NTT East

  • - Creation of Voice Detection Systems: Focusing on enhancing the voice detection infrastructure.
  • - DID/VC Technology Development: Managing system assessments and implementation strategies based on developed frameworks.

Future Prospects

Considering the continued growth of AI and its applications, a rise in sophisticated scams and misinformation is anticipated. NABLAS and NTT East plan to leverage results from this project to support the information dissemination in governmental communications, disaster responsiveness, and crisis management, optimizing practicality and functionality within everyday operations.

In pursuit of generating a safe and reliable societal context, continuous technological development aims to ensure accurate information flows while reducing the likelihood of misinformation. Through such, we strive toward a safer, more transparent future where data integrity and citizen trust remain paramount.
