Infomatics Pioneers Global Standard for Non-Intrusive Load Monitoring Technology

Infomatics Sets a New Standard in Energy Management

Infomatics Inc., based in Minato City, Tokyo, has played a crucial role in pushing forward the world's first international standard for Non-Intrusive Load Monitoring (NILM) technology. This effort has been recognized through a six-year entrusted project from the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, leading to the formal release of the NILM-IS (International Standard for NILM) by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on June 25, 2025. This groundbreaking development represents a significant stride towards establishing an internationally recognized framework for NILM technologies.

Pioneering NILM Technology

The NILM technology developed by Infomatics utilizes artificial intelligence to estimate power consumption breakdown directly from the main current waveform in real-time. This innovative approach lacks a globally accepted standard for comparison, which has made evaluating and assessing its application challenging. As a pioneer in this field, Infomatics has taken proactive steps to communicate its findings and collaborate with several leading electrical manufacturers in Europe, facilitating discussions and technical comparisons through the TC85WG20. Additionally, Infomatics has established a NILM Task Force to foster collaboration among domestic associates, who have offered significant guidance throughout this process.

Achievements and Recognition

In 2021, Infomatics achieved a significant milestone by publishing the Technical Specification (IEC TS 63297:2021), which led to the company being honored with the prestigious IEC1906 Award for its contributions to the field. This recognition has fueled Infomatics' continued efforts to elevate its work to the status of an International Standard, culminating in the recent formal release of IEC 63297:2025.

Significance of the NILM-IS

This new international standard aims to address the challenges associated with measuring and analyzing power consumption data, which typically varies in granularity, frequency, and volume based on how it's collected. The NILM-IS specifies classifications for measurement data, allowing for rational selection according to various applications and the feasibility of integration with smart meters. Notably, Infomatics’ approach positions its technology among the highest classifications, ensuring compatibility with smart meters worldwide.

Promoting Global Adoption of NILM Analysis

Incorporated in 2014 into the strategic energy-saving technology innovation program by NEDO (New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization), Infomatics demonstrated that existing first-generation smart meter hardware could be adapted. By only modifying firmware, Infomatics could obtain high-resolution power data necessary for NILM analysis without significant additional investments, thereby proving the feasibility of offering NILM analysis services at a national infrastructure scale.

The issuance of the NILM-IS serves as a major milestone in Infomatics' long-term vision of globally deploying NILM analysis services on a national scale. Currently, Infomatics offers both high-value NILM analysis services using proprietary sensors and simplified NILM analysis services based on 30-minute consumption data from existing domestic smart meters. The company is dedicated to advancing its high-value NILM analysis capabilities to fully utilize smart meter data in the future.

Moving forward, Infomatics remains committed to enhancing its NILM technologies' international recognition and proliferation while contributing to sustainable societal development through effective energy management strategies.

The company anticipates minimal impact from this initiative on its performance for the fiscal year ending December 2025; however, it will promptly provide updates should significant changes arise.
