Children's Hospital of Philadelphia Appoints New Surgeon-in-Chief

The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) has made a significant announcement regarding its leadership in pediatric surgery. Dr. Jesse A. Taylor, previously the Chief of the Division of Plastic, Reconstructive and Oral Surgery at CHOP, will take on the role of Surgeon-in-Chief and Chair of the Department of Surgery starting July 1, 2026. This decision comes after a rigorous national search to find the right candidate to lead CHOP's esteemed surgical team.

Dr. Taylor's extensive experience in the field, combined with his dedication to enhancing surgical practices, makes him an excellent fit for this pivotal position. He has spent the last eight years expanding clinical programs and research initiatives at CHOP while also boosting the hospital's international patient referrals. In addition to his new role, Dr. Taylor holds the Peter Randall Endowed Chair in Plastic Surgery and is a Professor at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania.

Dr. Taylor is succeeding Dr. N. Scott Adzick, who has been at the helm of pediatric surgery at CHOP for 31 years. Dr. Adzick has left an enduring legacy by establishing a robust framework for pediatric surgical care, fostering significant growth in the department, and securing necessary funding to sustain ongoing innovations. He will continue to contribute to the hospital as a surgeon and faculty member and will co-direct the Richard D. Wood Jr. Center for Fetal Diagnosis and Treatment.

With over 370 peer-reviewed publications, Dr. Taylor is also a director with the American Board of Plastic Surgery and serves as the Secretary General of the International Society of Craniofacial Surgery.

His academic path began with undergraduate studies at Washington and Lee University, followed by a medical degree from Vanderbilt University. His residency was completed in General and Plastic Surgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital, supplemented by additional fellowships in Plastic Surgery and Craniofacial Surgery.
