Mount Gay Unveils Its Fourth Edition of Single Estate Series
Mount Gay, the storied rum distillery known as the world's oldest, has just launched an exciting addition to its acclaimed Single Estate Series: the
25_04_Vt19dp. This release represents the second single harvest year rum produced from the outstanding 2019 sugar cane harvest in St. Lucy, Barbados. Master Blender Trudiann Branker, recognized for her expertise and artistry, has intricately crafted this limited release rum, further enhancing Mount Gay's rich, 320-year legacy in the rum industry.
A Legacy of Quality and Sustainability
Founded in 1703, Mount Gay has long been committed to producing high-quality rum using sustainable methods. In 2015, after reclaiming 324 acres of historical sugar cane estates, Mount Gay transformed into a fully integrated operation by managing the production from field to bottle. This transition not only revived their legacy but allowed for yearly harvesting of estate-grown sugar cane, which is then fermented, distilled, and aged at the distillery.
Branker emphasizes that the creation of 25_04 is deeply tied to Mount Gay's heritage and the unique terroir of Barbados. The rum reflects the specific characteristics of the 2019 harvest, a year marked by the integration of regenerative agriculture practices on the estate. The result is a spirited elixir born from a blend of delicate pot still distillates, embodying the rich essence of the island.
Design and Packaging
Visually striking, the rum bottle features an eye-catching sunset-inspired orange label, commemorating the year of release (25 for 2025 and 04 for the fourth in the series). The unique term
Vt19 denotes the single-harvest year from which the sugar cane was sourced, while
dp captures the essence of the two distinct distillations involved in this double pot distilled rum. Sustainability remains a key focus; each bottle is crafted from 70% recycled glass, and labels utilize minimal ink, encouraging consumers to use QR codes to explore the story behind the making of the rum.
Tasting Notes
At
55% ABV, 25_04 invites enthusiasts to indulge in its bold flavors. The nose reveals vibrant notes of green apple and red fruits, harmonizing with floral hints of white roses and jasmine. As the scent evolves, sweet hints of toffee and a touch of vanilla merge with comforting gingerbread spices.
The palate tells a compelling story of cherry and red fruits, balanced by an engaging smoky saltiness and sharp oak, enriched by subtle floral undertones. A light bitterness adds depth, while caramel interlaces seamlessly with red fruits to finish with a pleasing equilibrium. This captivating blend exemplifies the rich flavors derived from the land and the meticulous aging process in American oak ex-bourbon barrels for five years.
