BAE Systems Unveils Plans to Expand Submarine Manufacturing with Major Investments
BAE Systems Prepares for Submarine Manufacturing Growth
BAE Systems has made a significant investment of more than $260 million over the past six years to bolster its submarine manufacturing capabilities. This initiative comes as part of the company's commitment to support the U.S. Navy and its maritime partners by enhancing its operational capacities in both Louisville, Kentucky, and Jacksonville, Florida.
The Louisville facility, in particular, has benefited from an investment exceeding $60 million. This funding has been allocated to various enhancements such as advanced machining centers, upgraded heavy-lift cranes, and improved welding equipment that collectively augment the site's capabilities for submarine manufacturing. The facility boasts over 200,000 square feet dedicated to submarine construction, thereby positioning itself as a critical asset in the maritime industrial base.
Charles Lewis, the director of Submarine Programs for Platforms & Services at BAE Systems, emphasized the company's readiness to expand production and reinforce its manufacturing capabilities. “BAE Systems is ready to expand submarine production and build the submarine structures that are vital to safeguarding our nation,” he stated. The firm aims to apply its extensive experience as a prime contractor in other sectors to strengthen submarine construction efforts, collaborating closely with other shipbuilders.
Meanwhile, the Jacksonville shipyard has seen over $200 million invested to enhance its operations, including the establishment of a modern ship-lift and land-level repair facility along with a dedicated welding training center. These investments are crucial for developing the workforce skills tailored to the demands of modern submarine fabrication.
In terms of output, the Louisville site is recognized for its production of vital components such as the Virginia Payload Module missile tubes used in Virginia-class submarines and the Bearing Support Structure for Columbia-class submarines. Moreover, the Jacksonville facility has commenced the fabrication of deck structures specifically designed for the Columbia-class program.
Both facilities are poised to not only meet current needs but also adapt to the requirements of the future as the global defense landscape evolves. BAE Systems is firmly committed to cultivating a well-trained workforce and reorganizing operations to facilitate the construction of complex submarine structures, ensuring they are equipped to tackle the challenges ahead.
This extensive investment reflects BAE Systems' long-term strategy to enhance its submarine manufacturing capabilities while supporting national defense initiatives. As the company continues to innovate and invest in its facilities and workforce, it aims to ensure their prominence within the maritime industry, contributing significantly to the defense capabilities of the U.S. Navy and allied maritime partners.
By fostering advancements in technology and workforce development, BAE Systems is not just preparing for immediate production demands but is also laying the groundwork for sustained growth and innovation in submarine manufacturing for years to come.
