Shibuya’s Heartfelt Support for the Deaflympics
As the countdown begins for the first-ever Deaflympics to be held in Tokyo in November 2025, Shibuya is stepping up its efforts to rally the community's support. In a beautiful showcase of creativity and unity, local artist Hidehiko Kado has partnered with students from Harajuku Gaiin Middle School to create a stunning piece of support art. This vibrant artwork, inspired by the sign language symbol for applause, features the children’s heartwarming messages and illustrations.
The Deaflympics is a significant event, marking 100 years of history, and will see various sports including table tennis hosted in the iconic Tokyo Gymnasium. Shibuya has been chosen as one of the venues for the opening and closing ceremonies, making local initiatives even more crucial.
Creating Art that Speaks Volumes
Kado, who is a child of Deaf adults (CODA), understands the importance of expression through different forms of communication. Growing up immersed in sign language and Deaf culture, he has dedicated his career to exploring diverse artistic expressions. The collaborative artwork is not merely a creation; it symbolizes a heartfelt message of support for the athletes and the Deaf community as a whole. The design cleverly intertwines the universal sign for applause with the children’s artistic flair, resulting in a piece that transcends language barriers.
This artwork will not only be displayed at Shibuya City Hall but will also appear on supportive flags throughout the busy Sendagaya shopping district, as well as on volunteer uniforms during the games. It promises to be everywhere, spreading joy and encouragement in the lead-up to the event.
Countdown to the Deaflympics
To further amplify the excitement, Shibuya will unveil a countdown panel designed by Kado on August 5, 2025, marking 100 days until the opening of the games. This engaging countdown will serve as a new symbol for the community, inviting residents to join in the anticipation and celebrate the upcoming festivities.
A Video Message of Support
Alongside the stunning artwork, Shibuya has also launched an original support video for the Deaflympics. This video features Deaf athletes, sign language interpreters, local residents, and sports volunteers all expressing their support. With subtitles available in Japanese, English, and sign language, the video is designed to be accessible to everyone, ensuring that both hearing and Deaf individuals can enjoy it. The video will be available on Shibuya's official YouTube channel and on digital signage located in the city hall's east entrance from August 5 until the conclusion of the games in November.
Join Us in Celebrating
The Shibuya community is encouraged to engage in this vibrant celebration of the Deaflympics. The original artwork, countdown panel, and support video represent a collective spirit aiming to foster inclusivity and excitement ahead of the games. The unveiling of the art and the video will provide opportunities for local media to cover this noteworthy event and highlight Shibuya’s unwavering support for the Deaflympics.
Those interested in interviewing Kado or attending the unveiling ceremony are requested to submit a registration form by August 4 to ensure a smooth visit.
