AtkinsRéalis and Indiana Join Forces to Pioneer CANDU® Nuclear Technology Deployment for U.S. Energy Future

AtkinsRéalis Partners with Indiana to Evaluate CANDU® Nuclear Technology

In a notable development for U.S. energy goals, AtkinsRéalis, alongside the State of Indiana and Hoosier Energy Rural Electric Cooperative, has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). This partnership aims to assess the potential rollout of a campus of up to eight CANDU® nuclear reactors, which could deliver a remarkable 6.0 GW of nuclear-powered electricity to help meet Indiana’s growing energy demands while committing to reliability and sustainability.

Joe St. Julian, the President of Nuclear at AtkinsRéalis, emphasized the significance of Governor Braun's leadership, underlining a practical commitment to fulfilling rising electricity needs without compromising affordability. This collaboration embodies a joint effort to tackle energy challenges and enhance energy security while creating high-skilled job opportunities for local communities.

CANDU Technology Overview

CANDU technology boasts over six decades of operational experience and has established itself as a dependable nuclear energy solution worldwide. The proposed project envisions eight reactors capable of generating significant baseload power, enhancing grid resilience while also addressing the environmental sustainability goals crucial for today's energy landscape.

Emphasizing reliability and flexibility, the CANDU reactors utilize natural uranium fuel and offer unique adaptability for varying energy demands. With an impressive operational history, CANDU technology stands out as a viable option amidst the evolving conversations around nuclear energy’s role in achieving affordable, clean power.

Exploring Multi-Unit Solutions

The proposed multi-unit or fleet approach entails a standardized design to streamline construction processes while fostering a sustained skilled workforce within Indiana. In conjunction with the nuclear facilities, the feasibility of constructing smaller-scale gas turbine plants will also be evaluated to expedite power deployment. This synergistic method promises to enhance the reliability of service and maintain competitive electricity costs across multiple sites.

As electricity demand increasingly escalates due to advancements in manufacturing, artificial intelligence, and electrification trends, the need for a robust nuclear option becomes more apparent. This MOU sets the stage for a detailed exploration of the requirements for a potential multi-unit nuclear program, considering aspects such as site selection, commercial structures, and workforce development.

Community Engagement and Future Prospects

The collaboration recognizes the importance of thorough engagement with local communities and stakeholders throughout the evaluation process, ensuring that insights from local officials, landowners, and businesses are taken into account in any future project developments. Hoosier Energy’s President, Donna Walker, articulated the importance of an inclusive energy strategy and expressed enthusiasm for potential nuclear advancements.

As part of the initiative, AtkinsRéalis has begun pre-application engagement with the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), building on its commitment to bring CANDU technology to the U.S. market. This strategic approach includes leveraging established Canadian regulatory expertise to navigate the licensing process effectively.

A Commitment to Economic Growth

AtkinsRéalis remains devoted to supporting Indiana’s infrastructure and economic development, particularly through its broad range of engineering services. The collaboration aims to address both energy demands and labor market needs, creating opportunities for well-paying jobs that can fortify local economies. Through strategic innovations in nuclear technology, the partnership seeks not only to provide stable electricity but also to contribute to the long-term resilience of Indiana’s energy infrastructure.

In summary, the collaboration among AtkinsRéalis, Indiana, and Hoosier Energy signifies a pivotal step towards harnessing proven nuclear technology to bolster the state's energy landscape while ensuring a sustainable and prosperous future for its communities.
