Indianapolis Recycling Facility Opening

The facility will process a variety of plastics collected from households and businesses across Indiana and nearby states. These include PET (used in water and soda bottles), HDPE (found in milk jugs or detergent bottles), and polypropylene (typically seen in to-go cups or margarine tubs). The recycling process includes shredding, washing, and sorting these materials, ultimately converting them into recycled PET flake, which is utilized in the manufacture of new beverage bottles.

Significantly, this innovative approach stands to change the narrative around recycled plastics in the U.S. Historically, many of these materials ended up downcycled into items like carpets or clothing, limiting their recyclability and lifespan. However, with the new Polymer Center, Republic Services anticipates enhancing the durability of plastic packaging, enabling PET bottles to be recycled numerous times—up to six or seven—thus extending their lifecycle considerably. HDPE jugs could find their way back to consumers in as quickly as 120 days after processing.

Expanding the Network

Plans for future expansion of this recycling initiative are already underway. Republic Services is developing a nationwide network of recycling facilities. Earlier in 2023, a similar Polymer Center opened in Las Vegas, and another Blue Polymers facility is anticipated in Buckeye, Arizona, later this year. Additional complexes are in development to establish a robust recycling framework across the Northeastern U.S.

Spanning approximately 300,000 square feet, the Indianapolis recycling complex is expected to create around 125 skilled local jobs, contributing significantly to the economy of the area. The project received support through various incentives, including grants from the Indiana Department of Environmental Management and tax credits from the City of Indianapolis, aimed at promoting smart manufacturing technologies.
