Introduction
On May 19, 2025, BNBuilders, in collaboration with the renowned architecture firm Gensler, proudly announced the completion of the Pacific Center, a cutting-edge life sciences campus in the heart of Sorrento Mesa, San Diego. This monumental project spans an impressive 690,000 square feet and encompasses four distinct buildings, making it a central hub for research and innovation in the life sciences sector.
The Vision for Pacific Center
The development of Pacific Center was driven by a vision to create an environment that not only meets the technical requirements of life sciences tenants but also fosters a sense of community and well-being. The campus is designed to adapt to the evolving needs of its occupants, providing a key destination for San Diego's rapidly growing life sciences community. Project Executive Alessandra Lapadula encapsulated this vision eloquently, stating, "Our goal was to build a space that not only meets the technical needs of life sciences tenants but also fosters connection and well-being for the entire community."
Architectural Highlights
The Pacific Center features four unique buildings:
1.
Six-Story Structural Steel Lab and Office Building: This building incorporates the latest technological advancements necessary for research and development.
2.
Six-Story Architectural Concrete Building: Designed to showcase innovative architecture while being functional for laboratory and office use.
3.
12-Story Post-Tensioned Parking Structure: Catering to the parking needs of the campus, this modern facility enhances the overall accessibility of the center.
4.
Two-Story Mass Timber Amenity Center: Serving as the crown jewel of the Pacific Center, this distinctively designed building utilizes mass timber, a rare construction method in the region, for both aesthetic and sustainable benefits.
The Amenity Center: A Community Hub
The amenity center is not only visually striking but also practically designed to enhance the experience of all who work at Pacific Center. With a curated collection of food offerings, the center houses:
- - The Treehouse: A market and café that brings a vibrant dining option to the campus.
- - The Perca: A sit-down restaurant planned for the future to provide even more culinary diversity.
- - AVNU Wellness Club: A state-of-the-art fitness center equipped with advanced machinery, offering group classes, physical therapy, and personal training services aimed at improving health and well-being among campus tenants.
Commitment to Sustainability and Community
One of the standout features of the Pacific Center is its commitment to sustainability. The use of mass timber not only brings a unique aesthetic appeal but also significantly reduces the carbon footprint of the buildings. This aligns with the broader goals of BNBuilders, emphasizing diversity, community engagement, and sustainable building practices.
BNBuilders undertook substantial portions of the construction, including self-performing concrete work on the architectural concrete building and drywall services across the campus. This hands-on approach ensured high-quality results while adhering to safety and innovative construction protocols throughout the multi-year timeline.
The Future of Pacific Center
The Pacific Center is poised to become a major player in San Diego's life sciences landscape. By providing a modern, amenity-rich environment, it positions itself as an essential resource for research and collaborative innovations in science. As the landscape of life sciences continues to evolve, the Pacific Center is fully equipped to adapt and grow, ensuring it remains a vital hub for the community.
