Mews Secures Historic E-Money License for Hospitality Sector in Europe
Mews Obtains Pioneering E-Money License
Mews Financial Services B.V., an institution created by Mews Systems, has made headlines by receiving the first-ever e-money license awarded to a hospitality management system in the European Economic Area. This license, issued by De Nederlandsche Bank (DNB), signifies a significant step toward Mews’ aim to consolidate its management system as a central platform for integrated financial services tailored specifically for the hospitality industry.
A Major Milestone in Hospitality Financial Management
The newly acquired license empowers Mews to handle payments through its own infrastructure, granting hotels enhanced control over their cash flow processes within the system they already utilize. Traditionally, operational data was stored within Mews while financial data resided in third-party systems. This e-money license enables Mews to merge both financial and operational data in one location — where revenue is generated.
Richard Valtr, the founder of Mews, emphasized that financial systems within the hospitality sector have been fragmented. In many establishments, one system manages orders, another handles banking, and excel sheets bridge the gaps between them. He stressed that a hotel management system ought to incorporate financial management to optimize productivity and growth. The entry of embedded payments aims to close this gap, and the new license lays a robust foundation for fortifying the financial infrastructure that the industry has long needed.
Addressing Complex Financial Needs in the Hotel Sector
In 2025, Mews reported a staggering transaction volume of $19.7 billion within the hotel sector. Given this scale, the complexity of linking hotel revenues with inventory, transactions, and bookings has significantly increased, surpassing the capabilities of the fragmented systems originally designed for management. Mews aims to tackle this complexity with a regulated, integrated, and tailored financial infrastructure that meets the specific needs of the hospitality sector.
As a regulated entity, Mews Financial Services is now subject to corporate governance standards, protections, and compliance requirements inherent in providing payment services within the EEA. This includes the strict separation of customer funds from Mews’ operational accounts. Furthermore, the license will facilitate the integration of risk and fraud monitoring, sanctions checking, and anti-money laundering functionalities directly into the management system.
Future Steps for Financial Services in Hospitality
Mews Financial Services plans to gradually roll out its regulated functionalities by late 2026, starting with a pilot group of accommodations in the Netherlands. The aim is to expand these services progressively across the entire EEA.
Mews envisions becoming a trusted financial partner for leading companies in the hospitality industry, leveraging operational data already flowing through its platform to innovate new financial products designed to enhance hotel revenues and improve overall business management.
