Japan Medical University Approved New Nursing Department and Graduate Program Set to Open in 2026

New Milestone in Nursing Education at Japan Medical University

Japan Medical University, located in Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo, has officially announced the establishment of its new Faculty of Medical Health Sciences with a Nursing Department and a Graduate School majoring in Nursing, set to launch in April 2026. This initiative has been endorsed by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology as of August 29, 2025, marking a significant advancement in nursing education within Kawasaki City and making it the first private university to offer these programs in the area.

The university has a rich history of commitment to healthcare development and societal contribution since its founding in 1876. With a focus on nurturing compassionate healthcare professionals who not only treat illnesses but also provide emotional support to patients and their families, Japan Medical University is dedicated to evolving the quality of medical care in accordance with the increasing importance of nursing in healthcare settings.

Objectives of the New Nursing Department

The launch of the Nursing Department aims to improve healthcare quality further by enhancing the capabilities of the entire medical team, including nurses and public health nurses. As the demand for high-quality nursing education grows, the university is poised to educate the next generation of healthcare professionals equipped to meet the challenges of modern medical environments.

Graduate School of Nursing

In conjunction with the new undergraduate program, the Graduate School of Nursing will also be introduced. This graduate program will offer two courses: the Nursing Research Course and the Advanced Practice Midwifery Course. The institution recognizes that to effectively address evolving healthcare needs—shaped by factors such as aging populations and decreasing birth rates—the nursing workforce must attain greater specialization. The goal is to cultivate professionals capable of acting as educators and researchers in nursing, thus enriching both nursing education and research activity to contribute to advancements in the field.

Upcoming Open Campus Event

In anticipation of these new offerings, an open campus event will be held on September 14, 2025, at the Kawasaki City Convention Hall. This event will provide prospective students with insights into the curriculum and opportunities available at the new Nursing Department.
