Biocon's Pathbreaking Biosimilar for HER2-positive Breast Cancer

Biocon Biologics Limited, a subsidiary fully owned by Biocon Limited, has recently announced a groundbreaking achievement in the biosimilar landscape. The European Medicines Agency (EMA) Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use (CHMP) has issued a positive opinion for Biocon's pertuzumab biosimilar, known under the brand name Pebrilzo®. This recommendation paves the way for a marketing authorization aimed at treating HER2-positive breast cancer at various disease stages.

The positive assessment comes after a comprehensive evaluation of the application submitted by Biocon Biologics Ireland Limited, a fully owned indirect subsidiary of Biocon. This milestone marks the first time a monoclonal antibody biosimilar has received a favorable opinion from the CHMP under the EMA's new clinical approach, showcasing an evolving landscape in the biosimilars field.

Shreehas Tambe, CEO of Biocon, expressed that the positive opinion signifies a crucial step towards improving access to biological therapies for women suffering from HER2-positive breast cancer across Europe. "Our biosimilar pertuzumab represents not just a product, but hope for many women battling this aggressive form of breast cancer," he remarked. The approval mirrors rising regulatory confidence in advanced analytical evidence and clinical pharmacology to establish biosimilarity in drugs.

Understanding Pebrilzo®: Benefits and Application

Pebrilzo® is a biosimilar medication, based on pertuzumab, a monoclonal antibody with a high affinity for the human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2). By binding to HER2, it inhibiting the proliferation of tumor cells over-expressing this receptor, thereby limiting cancer growth. This medication is indicated in combination with trastuzumab and chemotherapy for the neoadjuvant treatment of adult patients with HER2-positive breast cancer that is locally advanced, inflammatory, or at an early stage with a high risk of recurrence.

Furthermore, it can be utilized in conjunction with trastuzumab and docetaxel for adults with metastatic or locally recurrent unresectable HER2-positive breast cancer who have not previously been treated with anti-HER2 therapy or chemotherapy for their metastatic condition.

Scientific Foundation and Future Prospects

Through extensive structural and functional analytical characterization using cutting-edge techniques, along with comparative clinical pharmacokinetic data, Biocon demonstrated that Pebrilzo® is highly similar to its reference biological drug. Importantly, this assessment found no clinically significant differences in terms of quality, safety, or efficacy.

As Biocon embarks on the next steps, the European Commission will conduct a final review of the marketing authorization application. A favorable decision will enable the technical summary (SmPC) to be available in all official European Union languages, and the European Public Assessment Report (EPAR) will be published on the EMA website shortly thereafter. Until then, the product remains unauthorized for use in the EU.
