Experience the Giant Water Plant Parade!

In August 2025, the Kusatsu City Water Plant Park (Mizunomori) in Shiga Prefecture will host a special event celebrating the peak season of the impressive Paraguay Water Lily. With leaves measuring up to 1.5 meters, this unique aquatic plant creates a magical atmosphere, especially during this time of year.

Event Highlights

The exciting events will take place from August 2nd to August 24th, exclusively for children weighing 30 kg or less. Participants will have the opportunity to ride on the gigantic leaves of the Paraguay Water Lily, a once-in-a-lifetime experience! In addition, there will be a special photo opportunity on September 6th and 7th where visitors can place their plush toys on the lily pads for a fun and memorable “nuikotori” (stuffed toy photography) session.

Not only will guests be able to appreciate the majestic Paraguay Water Lily during the day, but the park will also offer a nighttime experience with special opening hours and lighting from August 29th to 31st. Visitors can view the flowers that bloom at night and enjoy guided tours provided by park staff.

About the Paraguay Water Lily

Originating from Paraguay and Argentina, the Paraguay Water Lily is famous for its enormous, lily-pad-shaped leaves that can grow up to 1 meter and are capable of supporting children. Every August, visitors flock to the Mizunomori park to witness the beauty of these aquatic plants at their peak.

Examining the plants in their natural habitat, guests can also enjoy stunning views of Lake Biwa and the surrounding mountains. This location is a rare gem for enthusiasts of water plants and tropical greenery alike.

Riding Experience: “Let’s Ride the Paraguay Water Lily!”

• - When: August 2, 3, 9, 10, 11, 16, 17, 23, and 24 on weekends and holidays
• - Time: 9:30 AM to 12:00 PM
• - Limit: First 60 children per day (ticket distribution starts at 9:00 AM)
• - Cost: Free (admission fee not included)
• - Who’s eligible: Children who are able to walk alone across a bridge to reach the lily pads (no carrying allowed)

Nighttime Special: “Paraguay Water Lily Light Up 2025”

• - When: August 29 to 31
• - Time: 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM (Last entry 8:30 PM)
• - Features: Illuminated lake showing the blooming Paraguay Water Lily and guided tours at night.

Plush Toy Photography Experience: “Plush Toys on the Paraguay Water Lily”

• - When: September 6 and 7
• - Time: 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM
• - Limit: First 30 participants (tickets available at 9:00 AM)
• - Note: Participants may bring plush toys weighing a maximum of 5 kg to place on the leaves for photos.

Delightful Dining Experience

Guests can enjoy dining at the park's restaurant, featuring special dishes inspired by the appearance of the Paraguay Water Lily. During the same weekend of the nighttime events, there will be a special discount on a popular lotus leaf soft serve ice cream, priced lower for all attending.
