AGFUND Celebrates Global Recognition in Banking Excellence
In an impressive display of social commitment, the Arab Gulf Programme for Development, commonly known as AGFUND, has recently been awarded the prestigious title of "Excellence in Inclusive Banking and Social Impact". This remarkable achievement was celebrated at the Sustainable Development Goals Awards 2026, hosted by the World Savings and Retail Banking Institute (WSBI) in collaboration with the European Savings and Retail Banking Group (ESBG).
The award ceremony took place in Bangkok, Thailand, on October 16, during the same week as the annual meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank Group. Hammam bin Nasser bin Juraid, the CEO of AGFUND, proudly accepted the award on behalf of the organization, marking a significant milestone in AGFUND's journey towards enhancing financial literacy and inclusion for marginalized communities.
A Legacy Rooted in Empowerment
The recognition is not merely a trophy; it is a testament to over two decades of hard work and dedication. His Royal Highness Prince Abdulaziz bin Talal, president of AGFUND, highlighted how the founders of AGFUND’s microfinance banks laid the groundwork for the organization’s impressive social impact. The late Prince Talal bin Abdulaziz’s vision of creating institutions focused on empowering vulnerable populations continues to resonate through AGFUND’s operations.
"This award reflects our commitment to utilizing financial services to empower underserved communities, enhance livelihoods, and promote economic independence," said Prince Abdulaziz. He emphasized the importance of expanding access to financial opportunities and measuring success through sustainable improvements in people’s lives.
Enabling Lasting Change
AGFUND's network has achieved remarkable results since its inception, serving more than 1.3 million clients and disbursing over $1.37 billion in financial assistance. Notably, women make up 59% of the borrowers, underscoring AGFUND’s role in advancing women's economic empowerment.
The award, bestowed by WSBI, recognized AGFUND’s innovative approach that seamlessly integrates financial services with social impact and sustainable development initiatives. This holistic strategy aligns with global calls for responsible banking practices that address the unique needs of underserved communities.
Expanding Horizons
Starting with its first bank in Jordan in 2004, AGFUND has successfully expanded its reach to nine countries, including Yemen, Bahrain, Syria, Lebanon, Palestine, Sudan, Mauritania, and Sierra Leone. The organization specifically targets communities that are often overlooked by traditional financial institutions.
To date, AGFUND has issued over 1.5 million loans, established more than 927,000 savings accounts, set up 112 branches, and employed over 1,500 individuals. These efforts focus on financing micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and income-generating activities, which are crucial for improving living conditions and fostering economic autonomy.
Future Aspirations
Looking ahead, AGFUND aims to further enhance its development partnerships, promote digital solutions, and offer innovative financial products. The organization also plans to integrate financial education with capacity-building, market access, and risk protection initiatives, ensuring that all aspects of financial literacy are addressed.
AGFUND is exploring opportunities for geographic expansion into Africa, leveraging institutional partnerships to adapt successful models to local contexts. Through these efforts, AGFUND strives to extend sustainable financial inclusion to more communities around the world.
