Children’s Creativity Shines at Original Robot Exhibition in Fuchu’s STEAM Classroom

In a thrilling celebration of innovation and creativity, Pendemy, a company that specializes in STEAM education by integrating cutting-edge digital technology with hands-on creation, hosted an Original Robot Exhibition at its robotics programming class in Fuchu, Tokyo.

This event was the culmination of a three-month learning cycle, where students first engaged in two months of foundational training on robot assembly and programming. Following this, the students spent an additional month conceptualizing and designing their original robots, showcasing their projects before peers and parents alike. At this exhibition, a plethora of unique creations demonstrated the students' rich imaginations and the results of their trial and error during the development process.

The Essence of the Exhibition: Fostering Curiosity and Inquiry in the AI Era

Pendemy’s robotics programming classes emphasize the importance of nurturing the ability to ask questions—skills that are increasingly essential in today’s AI-driven landscape. The first two months focus on building and programming predetermined robots, providing students with the foundational knowledge necessary for the final month, where they articulate and address their own questions: “What problem do I want to solve?” and “Who do I want to impress?” This fosters a sense of ownership and personal connection to their projects.

By the time of the exhibition, students had transformed their ideas into tangible robots, sharing their creations as a testament to their learning journey.

Highlighting Intriguing Projects: Three Standout Robots

The exhibition featured a range of projects, from those initially aimed at everyday problem-solving to highly sophisticated robots demanding superior balance. Here are three standout creations:

1. Emergency Response MER Robot
Inspired by a desire to help those in need, this robot reacts to emergencies by detecting problems with built-in sensors. Upon detection, it emits programmed siren sounds while quickly racing to the scene. This project exceeds mere play, reflecting an awareness of societal structures and the intention of contributing positively to others.

2. High-Difficulty Balance Motorcycle Robot
Fueled by a dream to operate a motorcycle, this ambitious project challenges norms by opting for a two-wheeled design without training wheels. Successfully maintaining balance requires advanced adjustments of the center of gravity and motor speed. Despite numerous falls, the student showcased extraordinary resilience by persistently refining the programming until they achieved successful two-wheeled movement.

3. Cinnamon Robot: Expressing a Beloved Character
This delightful robot is a unique representation of a favorite character using LEGO® bricks. When a pencil is inserted into its mouth, its internal motor spins, humorously imitating the character sharpening the pencil. Although it doesn’t actually sharpen pencils, this project exemplifies imaginative thinking, merging personal favorites with a daily activity in a creative manner.

Building Communication Skills and Confidence Through Presentation

Beyond merely demonstrating their robots, students were tasked with presenting their experiences. Each child explained the challenges they faced and the innovative solutions they crafted in their own words. Initially nervous, they gained significant confidence as parents and instructors warmly applauded their efforts, recognizing the complexity of what they had created. Pendemy asserts that this sentiment of individual ownership over both successes and failures is crucial for fostering lifelong, functional critical thinking skills.
