Explore the Rich Heritage of Japan's Good Luck Charms at d47 MUSEUM

From November 14, 2025, to March 15, 2026, the d47 MUSEUM in Shibuya, Tokyo, will host the 37th exhibition titled "47 Engimono Ten." This exhibition aims to celebrate Japan's rich tradition of good luck charms, known as "engimono," which embody the wisdom and unique craftsmanship of various regions across the country.

Good luck charms in Japan come in numerous forms, believed to invite fortune and ward off misfortune. This exhibition will present one special charm from each of Japan's 47 prefectures, telling the stories behind them, including well-known icons like "shimenawa," "daruma," and "maneki-neko," along with lesser-known, region-specific charms and traditional foods that serve similar purposes.

The term "engimono" originates from Buddhist teachings but evolved in the Edo period when people began to create these charms with the desire to obtain good fortune. Today, these charms are infused with various elements like color, shape, wordplay, and folklore, reflecting the regional identities and aspirations of the Japanese people.
