Accord BioPharma, a key player in the U.S. specialty pharmaceuticals market and a division of Intas Pharmaceuticals, has made a significant announcement regarding the availability of two new biosimilars: OSVYRTI® (denosumab-desu) and JUBEREQ® (denosumab-desu). Their introduction is set to enhance treatment options for patients dealing with critical bone health conditions like osteoporosis and bone complications associated with cancer, making these therapies more affordable.
The Significance of OSVYRTI and JUBEREQ
Both biosimilars are FDA-approved and can be used interchangeably with established drugs Prolia® and XGEVA®. OSVYRTI is primarily aimed at treating:
- - Postmenopausal women at high risk of fractures due to osteoporosis.
- - Men with osteoporosis who are also at high risk of fractures.
- - Patients experiencing glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis.
- - Men undergoing androgen deprivation therapy for prostate cancer.
- - Women on adjuvant aromatase inhibitor therapy for breast cancer who are at high risk for fractures.
JUBEREQ, on the other hand, focuses on:
- - Preventing skeletal-related events in individuals with multiple myeloma and bone metastases.
- - Treating adults and adolescents with unresectable giant cell tumors of bone.
- - Addressing hypercalcemia of malignancy that resists bisphosphonate therapy.
These biosimilars have been developed and manufactured entirely in-house by Accord, reflecting the company’s commitment to expanding its product portfolio and bolstering patient access to affordable treatment options.
Aiming for Patient-Centric Solutions
Chrys Kokino, President of Accord North America, emphasized the crucial need for patients with osteoporosis and cancer-related bone loss to access proven therapies. With these new launches, Accord aims not only to provide additional treatment options but also to deliver support through their AccordCares patient program, which offers financial assistance to eligible patients.
The burden of bone health conditions is staggering. Every year, around 1.9 million Americans suffer fragility fractures, leading to approximately 500,000 hospitalizations and 180,000 nursing home admissions. Projections indicate this number may rise significantly in the coming years. Furthermore, 300,000 to 600,000 Americans are currently living with bone metastases from solid tumors, with 35,000 new diagnoses of multiple myeloma each year, highlighting an urgent need for effective therapy options.
Cost-Effective Solutions
The introduction of OSVYRTI and JUBEREQ comes with consideration of cost. OSVYRTI is priced at $1,800.41 per 60 mg/mL syringe, while JUBEREQ costs $3,311.75 per 120 mg/1.7 mL vial. These prices offer medical providers cost-effective alternatives for denosumab therapy, which is essential given the high expenses associated with existing treatments.
Accord BioPharma has also worked to ensure comprehensive coverage for these products immediately upon launch. Both OSVYRTI and JUBEREQ are listed as preferred drugs on the Cigna Advantage and other commercial pharmacy benefit drug lists, effective July 1st. Patients with commercial insurance may qualify for access to these medications at little to no cost through AccordCares.
