A Celebration of Art and Champagne
On October 9, 2023, Dom Pérignon, the prestigious Champagne brand, honored the beginning of a new collaboration with contemporary artist Takashi Murakami at a special event held at the Kaikai Kiki Gallery in Tokyo. This celebration marked the unveiling of two limited-edition bottles, the
Dom Pérignon Vintage 2015 Takashi Murakami Limited Edition and the
Dom Pérignon Rosé Vintage 2010 Takashi Murakami Limited Edition. These creations embody the essence of traditional craftsmanship fused with modern artistic expression.
The project, entitled
"Creation is an Eternal Journey," signifies Dom Pérignon's unwavering commitment to creativity and ongoing dialogue with iconic creators. Murakami's designs, centered around his signature
“flower” motif, replace the traditional vineyard designs seen on the Dom Pérignon label, transforming these bottles into stunning works of art. The black bottles and gift boxes are not just vessels but are intricately designed to form a
“Floral Tableau” when arranged together, merging the beauty of Champagne with vibrant artistry.
An Evening of Artistic Fusion
The event was a confluence of culture and creativity, drawing together celebrities, artists, and fans of Dom Pérignon. The Managing Director,
Jacques Giraud, delivered a warm welcome, followed by an inspiring conversation with Murakami about the artistic concept behind the collaboration. The Chief Winemaker,
Vincent Chaperon, introduced the world premiere of the
Dom Pérignon Rosé Vintage 2010, highlighting the exceptional qualities of the Champagnes.
The evening became an exploration of creative dialogue, bridging the realms of tradition and modern culture. This was further accentuated by an exclusive exhibition featuring Murakami’s original artwork,
“A Summer Flower Field in a Golden Sky,” which added depth and resonance to the collaboration.
Notably, the culinary aspect was elevated through a pairing menu designed by
Natsuko Shoji, the owner-chef of the restaurant
été in Yoyogi Uehara, and a member of the Dom Pérignon Society. Her menu masterfully complemented the
Dom Pérignon Vintage 2015, enhancing its richness, delicate bitterness, and depth.
The celebration was brought to a close by a DJ set from
Tomoyuki Tanaka (known as FPM), who is recognized worldwide for his genre-defying style, creating a thrilling atmosphere. The attendees, including celebrities like Jin Akanishi and Yona, immersed themselves in the once-in-a-lifetime experience of enjoying the Murakami Limited Editions.
Voices from the Evening
Takashi Murakami expressed his delight, stating, "I am truly honored to work on the design for the Dom Pérignon Limited Edition bottle, a symbol of success. The gallery felt entirely transformed for today’s occasion. The flavor of the Rosé was astonishing, rich with the depth that comes with years of aging—a bottle I would like to share with my family on my last day."
Vincent Chaperon shared, "I am honored to present the
Dom Pérignon Rosé Vintage 2010 for the first time in Japan. I believe life is driven by emotions, which arise at the perfect moment. Today, the flowers from Murakami, the Rosé from Dom Pérignon, and Natsuko’s exquisite cuisine came together, igniting new emotional sparks in our hearts."
Jacques Giraud added, "I am thrilled to share this special day with all of you. It is an honor to present the new project, 'Creation is an Eternal Journey,' alongside Vincent Chaperon and Takashi Murakami. Dom Pérignon has always engaged in creative dialogues with numerous cultural artists, and the profound philosophical essence found in Murakami's playfulness harmonizes beautifully with the timeless spirit of our wines. This collaboration symbolizes a new journey in creation for our Maison."
Natsuko Shoji also reflected on her experience, noting, "Dom Pérignon is the epitome of unique Champagne for me. Collaborating with Takashi Murakami, whom I have admired since childhood, is a dream come true. My culinary creations for this event were inspired by his iconic flower motifs, paying homage to the natural beauty of Japan."
