Bloomberg Launches New Electronic Trading System for Indian Government Bonds

Bloomberg's New Electronic Trading for Indian Government Bonds

Bloomberg has recently made significant strides in the Indian financial market by facilitating its first electronic trade of Indian Government Bonds (IGBs). This move marks a pivotal advancement in the internationalization of India's burgeoning Government Bond market. The newly launched electronic trading platform is specifically designed to allow Foreign Portfolio Investors (FPIs) to effectively access liquidity supported by both international and domestic banking institutions directly through the Bloomberg Terminal.

The significance of this new offering lies in its ability to provide a comprehensive electronic trading workflow for IGBs. FPIs can now place, monitor, execute, and allocate trades seamlessly within a fully electronic context. This innovative approach ensures that trading operates more efficiently by connecting directly with the Negotiated Dealing System-Order Matching (NDS-OM), which is managed and operated by Clearcorp Dealing Systems (India) Limited. The result is a dramatic enhancement in operational efficiency, coupled with a considerable reduction in manual processes, minimizing the chances of operational risks and mistakes.

Vernon Loh, a Fixed Income Trader at State Street Investment Management, expressed his enthusiasm: "We're thrilled to announce the successful implementation of the first fully electronic IGBs trade on Bloomberg. This achievement highlights our dedication to fostering innovation, boosting efficiency, and enhancing liquidity within fixed income markets."

Furthermore, Varun Chojhar, Head of Bloomberg for South Asia, noted, "We are delighted to integrate Bloomberg's global liquidity community with the NDS-OM, thus providing clients a more effective and efficient mechanism for accessing liquidity in the Indian Government Bond markets."

This innovative electronic trading solution is just one component of Bloomberg's expanding regional offerings. It follows the Bloomberg Indices' inclusion of India Fully Accessible Route (FAR) Bonds in its Emerging Market (EM) Local Currency Government Index in 2025, showcasing Bloomberg’s commitment to enhancing its services in the region.

Bloomberg's Electronic Markets platform is utilized by numerous leading financial institutions, enabling them to execute trades efficiently in over 175 global markets. More than 9,000 client firms leverage Bloomberg Electronic Markets to tap into an unparalleled depth and breadth of liquidity from over 1,500 dealers worldwide. The platform empowers market participants through comprehensive solutions throughout the trading lifecycle, emphasizing robust price transparency, analytics, automation, and execution, all underpinned by Bloomberg's top-tier multi-asset class data and tools.
