Iruma City’s Commitment to Renewable Energy
In a groundbreaking initiative,
Enerbank has partnered with
Iruma City to support the procurement of renewable energy for public facilities. With a focus on achieving a decarbonized society, Iruma City has taken significant steps to ensure that it sources 100% of its electricity from renewable resources. This initiative encompasses a total of 47 facilities including a comprehensive clean center and community centers, effectively contributing to a more sustainable future.
The Eneroku Reverse Auction Service
The backbone of this project is
Eneroku, a reverse auction service provided by Enerbank, which was specifically designed to facilitate the selection of retail electricity suppliers through fair and transparent competitive bidding processes. The auction commenced in April this year, representing a shift towards a greener operational strategy within the local government.
By utilizing the Eneroku platform, Iruma City has successfully balanced the dual objectives of reducing environmental impact and lowering electricity costs. This innovative approach not only fosters competition among electricity providers but also provides opportunities for multiple bids, leading to more cost-effective renewable energy contracts.
Results Achieved Through Reverse Auction
The results from the auction were promising. The planned electricity cost for fiscal year 2028 is projected to be approximately 179 million yen, a significant reduction from the standard expected cost of 220 million yen, yielding a cost reduction of about 41 million yen, which translates to a reduction rate of around 18.6%. Additionally, the implementation of renewable energy solutions is estimated to decrease greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 3,220 tons of CO2.
Support from Enerbank
Enerbank has not only facilitated the auction but has also been instrumental in simplifying the procurement process through various supportive actions, including:
1. Creation and organization of specifications and usage data for renewable energy procurement (complimentary).
2. Implementing the reverse auction (complimentary).
According to the Eco-Clean Policy Division of Iruma City, the complexity of the electricity purchasing landscape, exacerbated by rising electricity prices, was a persistent challenge prior to this collaboration. The partnership allowed for a clear understanding of the procurement process, making preparations for the auction much smoother.
Future Prospects
Looking ahead, even though renewable electricity can sometimes be more expensive than conventional sources, Iruma City plans to continue leveraging the Eneroku reverse auction service. This enables businesses and the local government to secure renewable energy at fair prices by monitoring other bids and engaging in re-bidding as necessary.
Enerbank emphasizes its commitment to further streamline energy procurement processes using digital solutions amid the evolving electricity market dynamics. The focus will also remain on enhancing collaboration with municipalities nationwide to bolster support for ambitions targeting zero-carbon futures.
