Transforming Education: Central Piedmont's New Hub for Beauty and Wellness Training

Central Piedmont's Harris Campus: A New Era in Beauty and Wellness Education

Central Piedmont Community College is set to revolutionize the educational landscape in Mecklenburg County with its plans for the Harris Campus. This ambitious initiative aims to establish the campus as a comprehensive hub for hands-on training in cosmetic arts, barbering, and massage therapy, catering to a growing demand for skilled professionals in these fields.

A Commitment to Community and Career Development

Set to be unveiled in August 2026, the revamped facilities at the Harris Campus demonstrate Central Piedmont's commitment to addressing local workforce needs while providing affordable beauty and wellness services to community members. The new Cosmetic Arts building, previously known as Harris I, will feature state-of-the-art salon and massage therapy environments designed to simulate real-world industry conditions.

In a statement, Dr. Heather Hill, the provost of Central Piedmont, remarked, “We’re turning passion into a profession. These best-in-class facilities at Harris Campus create direct and meaningful pathways into in-demand careers, preparing students to be confident, skilled, and workforce-ready from day one.”

Expanding Academic Opportunities

The enriched curriculum at the Harris Campus will accommodate a variety of educational tracks aimed at meeting the growing demand for licensed professionals across salons, spas, clinics, and other businesses throughout the region. This transformation includes an expansion of clinic capacity by a remarkable 40%, going from 50 to 70 chairs, thereby providing greater access for students and affordable services to the local community.

Reinforcing its value for students, Central Piedmont offers competitive pricing compared to private educational institutions. While private schools often charge between $22,000 and $31,000 for similar programs, Central Piedmont’s associate degree in cosmetology can be attained for just over $7,000. Additionally, continuing education programs range from approximately $600 to $1,700, making quality training accessible to a broader audience.

New Programs Add to the Curriculum

The updated curriculum will include:
  • - Associate in Applied Science degree - Cosmetology
  • - Cosmetology diploma
  • - Dual Enrollment for high school students leading to a Cosmetology Certificate
  • - New offering: Barbering Technology
  • - New offering: Cosmetology in Spanish
  • - New offering: Esthetics Technology
  • - New offering: Massage Therapy
  • - New offering: Nail Technology
  • - New offering: Natural Hair Care

Since its inception over a decade ago, Central Piedmont's cosmetology program has successfully licensed more than 700 graduates with an impressive 92% exam pass rate. The college collaborates with Pivot Point, an industry leader in beauty and wellness education, enabling students to learn using cutting-edge techniques and curriculum.

Enhancing Workforce Development and Community Access

The significance of this transformation cannot be overstated as Mecklenburg County witnesses an increase in the demand for well-trained cosmetic arts and massage therapy professionals. Central Piedmont is strategically positioned to address these regional and statewide workforce needs, producing certified graduates ready to contribute effectively in their respective fields.

The new salon and massage therapy spaces will not only serve as educational facilities but also enhance public access to high-quality, affordable beauty and wellness services. Dr. Hill emphasizes, “This project is about more than a building renovation; it’s about economic mobility, workforce development, and strengthening the connection between Central Piedmont and the community we serve.”
