CEO Insights: Åsa Bergman's Comments

In her remarks, President and CEO Åsa Bergman remarked on a robust quarter and the pivotal role of acquisitions in Sweco's growth strategy. She noted, “Despite the significant calendar effects, our EBITA improved by 15%, which can be attributed to higher average fees and an enhanced billing ratio.” Demand remained robust, especially in sectors such as energy, infrastructure, water, and environmental services, although challenges persisted in certain real estate segments.

The company showed agility in responding to market conditions, evidenced by increased order intake and an expanding backlog of projects. Six of the eight business areas reported improved EBITA, with Belgium, Denmark, and Sweden achieving excellent margins—in stark contrast to a challenging market in Finland.

Strategic Acquisitions

Strategic acquisitions emerged as a prominent element of Sweco's growth narrative. In the second quarter, two significant acquisitions were made: Juust, a civil engineering consultancy from the Netherlands, and Brain of Buildings, an expert in building technology. These moves underscore Sweco's ambition to bolster its market presence.

In addition to these acquisitions, Sustaining the momentum, the company proposed a cash offer for Projektengagemang Sweden AB, a notable entity in Sweden's consultancy landscape with around 650 professionals.

Recent Developments

Building on recent successes, Sweco announced another three acquisitions in July, targeting two specialist firms in Luxembourg—PROgroup and +ImpaKT—both of which emphasize data-driven management and sustainability solutions, alongside Volantis, specializing in engineering for industrial and healthcare sectors.

These strategic acquisitions will augment Sweco's capacity, adding over 900 experts and targeting market leadership in primary segments.

Key Project Wins

The projects secured in this quarter further illustrate Sweco's vital role in societal and industrial transformation. Contracts were signed to enhance public transport for Deutsche Bahn, support the establishment of a new biofuel plant in Sweden, and prepare for Denmark's inaugural hydrogen infrastructure. In urban development, pivotal projects include transforming a former harbor in the Netherlands into a flood-resilient residential area and redesigning Antwerp’s famous Meir Boulevard.

Future Priorities

Going forward, Sweco remains committed to delivering on its strategic priorities. Accelerating acquisitions and improving operational efficiency are at the forefront as the company focuses on capitalizing on growth opportunities and navigating market changes, thereby reinforcing its position as a leading architecture and engineering consultancy in Europe.

Following the release of results, a webcast and phone conference is scheduled for July 16 at 13:00 CET. Åsa Bergman and CFO Olof Stålnacke are set to discuss the report further.
