Kyorin University Initiates Revolutionary Burn Treatment Project
Kyorin University, located in Mitaka City, Tokyo, has announced the launch of innovative research and development under the guidance of the Japan Agency for Medical Research and Development (AMED). This project, titled "Research and Development of Automated Diagnosis and Treatment Support Programs for Burn Injuries," features a collaboration with Dentsu Research Institute Secure Solutions and the Biophilia Institute. The aim of this endeavor is to standardize burn treatment procedures using advanced programmatic medical devices, thereby addressing the current shortage of medical professionals in this specialized field.
The importance of this project cannot be overstated, as burn treatment often requires trained specialists, which are in short supply. The collaboration has been formalized through a subcontracting agreement, allowing Kyorin University to work alongside Dentsu Secure Solutions and the Biophilia Institute to develop AI technologies for diagnosis and treatment support, utilizing photographic images of burn injuries.
Since 2015, Dr. Sōichirō Katō and his research team, which includes Professor Yoshihiro Yamaguchi from Kyorin University and Professor Toshiyuki Tanaka from Keio University, have been conducting extensive research on techniques for analyzing and evaluating burn images. This project represents the first significant step toward product development and commercialization, building on the team's existing technological foundation.
Dr. Katō, the leading researcher, expressed gratitude for the project’s support, stating, "Our department and the Advanced Emergency Medical Center are proud of our history in burn treatments, and it’s incumbent upon us to leverage that expertise into transformative practices for the future. I am deeply thankful to Professor Yamaguchi and all involved for their unwavering support. We are committed to developing new medical devices that will assist practitioners on the front lines, utilizing cutting-edge technology including AI."
This initiative signals a critical advancement in medical technology, fostering collaboration between academia and industry while addressing the healthcare challenges posed by the scarcity of qualified personnel in specialized fields. As Kyorin University, Dentsu Secure Solutions, and the Biophilia Institute embark on this journey, the future of burn treatment may soon see a significant evolution, improving patient outcomes through innovative solutions.
This collaborative effort not only marks an essential stride for Kyorin University but also underscores the importance of partnerships in advancing healthcare technology. The ongoing research and subsequent developments promise a brighter future for burn care and treatment— one where critical medical interventions are more accessible and efficient than ever before.
