Tokyo's Historic Step into Carbon Credits

In a pioneering initiative, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government has announced the successful issuance of Japan's first-ever voluntary carbon credit sourced from the region's forests. To accomplish this, iForest employs advanced methodologies utilizing industrial drones and satellite data to quantify CO₂ absorption and assess biodiversity quantitatively.

The Process of Verification and Certification

The newly established carbon credits were certified by the Natural Capital Credit Consortium (NCCC), under methodologies specifically designed for new afforestation, reforestation, and vegetation recovery projects. For this demonstration project, conducted in Hinohara Village, Tokyo, a total of 77 tons of CO₂ credits were issued, representing a significant step toward the goals set for the future.

The certified carbon credits will be sold to Tokyo Tatemono Co., Ltd., one of the collaborating entities in this initiative. The project anticipates generating a total of 1,725 tons of CO₂ credits by 2045, an amount equivalent to the annual greenhouse gas emissions of approximately 486 average Japanese households, demonstrating its vast impact.
