Michter's Legacy Series 2025: Shenk's and Bomberger's Declaration
Michter's Distillery, based in Louisville, Kentucky, is set to launch two exciting new products as part of their Legacy Series in July 2025. The Shenk's Homestead Kentucky Sour Mash Whiskey and Bomberger's Declaration Kentucky Straight Bourbon represent the next chapter in the distillery's storied history. Known for their commitment to quality, Michter's is introducing these unique whiskeys that reflect their dedication to craft and tradition.
A Celebration of Heritage
Founded in 1753 by Swiss Mennonite farmer John Shenk, the distillery has undergone several name changes, from Shenk's to Bomberger's Distillery in the 1800s, eventually becoming Michter's in the mid-20th century. The Legacy Series pays homage to this rich history. According to Michter's president, Joseph J. Magliocco, each release in this series is crafted with care, ensuring that the distinctive flavors are preserved.
Unforgettable Flavors
The 2025 batch of Shenk's Homestead is particularly noteworthy. Described by Master Distiller Dan McKee, the whiskey boasts bold notes of baking spices, resulting from its finishing in roasted but uncharred French oak barrels from the Vosges forest. This meticulous aging process enhances the rye character and adds depth to the overall flavor profile.
Similarly, the Bomberger's Declaration is crafted with specific attention to the wood and its maturation process. Michter's Master of Maturation, Andrea Wilson, shared her enthusiasm for the outcome, noting that the use of various chinquapin barrels has contributed to the whiskey's signature taste. This year's batch features a fantastic range of barrel ages from 18 months to five years, affecting the oak's chemical contributions during aging.
