New Internship Program for Students with Disabilities
Japan's Nihon Sogo Research Institute, in collaboration with Mynavi Partners and Encourage, has announced a new paid internship program specifically designed for students and graduates with disabilities. Officially titled the "IT Engineer Career Creation Program", this initiative aims to provide vital support in their career development and employment opportunities.
Background and Purpose of the Program
In recent years, the employment rate of individuals with disabilities has shown a positive trend. However, over 60% of companies still face challenges when it comes to hiring disabled individuals. A significant issue identified in a survey by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare is the lack of suitable job roles available within companies, especially in the information and communications industry, where the actual employment rate sits at just 2.06%. Recognizing this gap, the collaborative initiative hopes to empower aspiring IT professionals with disabilities, providing them the necessary tools to secure a position as engineers, crucial for supporting Japan's financial infrastructure.
Program Overview
Set to commence in August 2026, this internship lasts for approximately six months, offering participants a structured learning experience through three key phases: onboarding, development, and practical implementation.
1.
Onboarding Phase (August to September 2026)
This introductory period lays the groundwork for participants. It focuses on deepening their understanding of both their disabilities and societal roles, while also familiarizing them with the basics of the financial and IT industries. This phase is fundamental in instilling the confidence needed to embark on a career path in IT.
2.
Early Internship Phase (October 2026 to January 2027)
During this stage, participants will engage in a comprehensive program launched by Japan’s leading IT firm, Nihon Sogo Research Institute. They will receive training covering fundamental programming skills and development methodologies, alongside business fundamentals and self-care training, paving the way for a career as an IT engineer.
3.
Later Internship Phase (January to late February 2027)
Participants will be assigned to actual departments, gaining hands-on experience with a blend of continuous support and mentorship. This phase aims to refine their understanding of workplace roles while enhancing their skill sets further through advanced IT training.
Application Process and Criteria
Interested candidates are encouraged to apply by May 29, 2026. To qualify, applicants must hold, or be in the process of obtaining, a disability certificate and be on track to graduate from a vocational school, junior college, college, master’s, or doctoral course by March 2027. Notably, previous work experience is not a requirement.
