Strengthening Power Generation Infrastructure in Greece
The Komotini Thermal Power Plant, located in the Rhodope region of northeastern Greece, has recently finalized significant repair work on its cooling tower pedestals. This upgrade utilized the innovative crystalline waterproofing and repair solutions offered by the Penetron System, ensuring enhanced durability in a demanding operational environment.
Penetron's Solution
In December 2025, the Komotini facility completed the repair project, which aimed to bolster its combined cycle generation infrastructure. The plant is designed to integrate gas turbines, alongside heat recovery steam generators and steam turbine generation, achieving an impressive electrical output capacity of 484.6 MW. However, during routine maintenance, the plant management team discovered cracks in the cooling tower's concrete base, prompting immediate action.

Repair Steps
The repair process commenced with hydro-blasting, a technique that effectively removed dilapidated material from the pedestals and revealed underlying cracks. Following this, the Penetron System was employed, which included:
- - PENETRON: A crystalline waterproof material expertly applied to reinforce and protect against corrosion, serving as a bonding primer.
- - PENEBAR SW-45: Hydrophilic waterstop cords installed strategically around the base to block water ingress.
- - PENETRON INJECT: A two-component grout injected into the cracks, effectively stopping leaks and further damage.
- - PENECRETE MORTAR: Used for extensive additional concrete repairs as deemed necessary.
Additionally, PENETRON ADMIX, a crystalline waterproofing admixture, was blended into new concrete sections to bolster their integrity further. This extensive use of advanced technology plays a vital role in ensuring that the repairs stand the test of time.
The Physics Behind the Technology
The Penetron crystalline technology is designed to enhance the longevity of repaired structures. Upon application, it reacts with moisture present in concrete, leading to the formation of insoluble crystals that fill pores, capillaries, and hairline cracks. This self-sealing mechanism not only reduces permeability but also ensures that the structure remains intact throughout its life cycle.
