United Breast Cancer Foundation Critiques FTC Allegations Against Kars-R-Us.com

In a proactive stance against misinformation, the United Breast Cancer Foundation (UBCF) has voiced strong objections to the recent complaint filed by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) against Kars-R-Us.com. The Foundation contends that the allegations mischaracterize its mission and operational practices, potentially leading to public confusion about its valuable services.

The FTC's complaint, which was lodged on September 25, 2025, described UBCF as an organization that 'purports' to assist individuals affected by cancer nationwide. UBCF’s leadership has asserted that the choice of the term 'purports' is misleading, suggesting that their commitment to helping those affected by breast cancer is somehow dubious. In reality, UBCF has been steadfast in its mission since its inception two decades ago, supporting countless individuals in need.

This October marks a significant milestone for UBCF as it celebrates 25 years of dedicated service to the breast cancer community. In fiscal year 2023 alone, UBCF provided financial grants to over 3,220 individuals and supported more than 112,800 people through its Gifts-in-Kind (GIK) program. Already, preliminary estimates predict 2,280 more individuals will benefit from financial assistance in fiscal year 2024, alongside continued support through GIK initiatives.

Despite the complaints detailing one specific program—the Breast Screening Program—UBCF provides a wide variety of services aimed at both men and women affected by breast cancer. Some of these programs include individual financial grants, child sponsorship for children whose parents are battling cancer, and holistic care grants that cover alternative therapies. UBCF also hopes to launch a new initiative in 2024 called The Wish Fund, aimed at offering respite travel for families navigating Stage 4 metastatic breast cancer.

Reflecting on its financial credibility, UBCF proudly holds a Platinum Seal of Transparency with Candid (formerly GuideStar) and has a commendable 4-star rating on Charity Navigator, indicating strong organizational health across multiple assessment areas. During the period in question, UBCF was also recognized as a legitimate charity within the Combined Federal Campaign (CFC), further supporting its reputation.

Kars-R-Us, which comes under scrutiny in the FTC's actions, aims to raise funds for nonprofits like UBCF via professional fundraising methods. UBCF argues that such practices are standard and necessary within the nonprofit sector, emphasizing the positive impacts that professional fundraisers drive, which include increased support for vulnerable populations.

Local outreach initiatives have become a cornerstone for UBCF’s strategy to combat breast cancer challenges in communities. For example, the Network of Giving program distributes essential donated items to breast cancer patients and their families at no cost. Recently, the organization held a Mattress Pink Bag Event in Tallahassee, Florida, where they distributed over $1.45 million in goods to 130 breast cancer patients and survivors. Such programs not only alleviate financial burdens but also foster community and solidarity among those affected.

In a testimonial from one of its beneficiaries, a grateful recipient stated, “UBCF has been a Godsend to me and my family… I thank this foundation from the bottom of my heart for helping me.” UBCF has received thousands of similar notes of appreciation that affirm their impact.

Stepping beyond financial support, UBCF actively educates communities on breast cancer awareness, prevention, and available resources through various campaigns. The Foundation emphasizes the importance of donors conducting their own research, advocating for transparency in nonprofit operations.

Despite the ambiguities presented in the FTC's complaint, UBCF remains committed to its mission and will defend its integrity and history of service against any misleading characterizations. Under the leadership of President and Executive Director Stephanie Mastroianni, who has overseen the organization since 2001, UBCF continues to evolve and expand its initiatives to better serve those affected by breast cancer. As the organization grows, it aims to be a reliable resource for hope and support in the breast cancer community nationwide.
