Airmedic Unveils New Medical Cabin for Bombardier Learjet 45XR Fleet
Airmedic, a leader in specialized air medical transport, has recently introduced an innovative medical cabin specifically designed for its Bombardier Learjet 45XR aircraft. This new cabin is not just a design upgrade; it establishes an advanced clinical environment meant to facilitate the smooth transport of patients and to set a new benchmark for critical in-flight care.
Enhanced Clinical Environment
The newly implemented medical cabin, already operational on its first aircraft, allows enhanced clinical access and improvements to the workflow of medical teams. This environment ensures that critical equipment is readily available, enabling crews to handle complex patient transfers more accurately and efficiently.
Louis-Philippe Loiselle Fortier, Vice President of Strategic Initiatives and Business Development at Airmedic, emphasized the investment's significance. He stated, "This investment reflects our commitment to excellence in onboard care. After reviewing mission developments, we designed a cabin that removes obstacles for our crews, strengthens clinical continuity, and provides a safer, more comfortable environment for patients and their families during repatriation flights, both short and long-distance."
Airmedic has made a robust investment in a fully redesigned permanent medical interior. Developed in close collaboration with engineering teams at Fargo Jet Center, this cabin has received certification from both the FAA and Transport Canada through a Supplemental Type Certificate. The design takes into account extensive feedback from crews, clients, and patients they serve.
Innovative Features of the Medical Cabin
The innovative features of the upgraded cabin include an advanced LifePort stretcher system, a composite side panel made of stainless steel for enhanced hygiene and durability, and a custom medical closet designed to protect essential equipment while ensuring easy access. Specialized overhead rails allow medical devices to be securely positioned above the care area. This includes vital instruments such as a defibrillator monitor, transport ventilator, and IV therapy units, all within ergonomic reach of the patient.
Moreover, the expanded cargo space aids patient handling, particularly for bariatric cases and incubator transports. Medical-grade surfaces enable effective decontamination between missions, while a tailored privacy curtain ensures patient dignity throughout the flight. An innovative SATCOM communication system and Skytrac ISAT-200A flight-tracking technology further enhance in-flight coordination, allowing crews to consult with doctors hands-free, without interrupting patient care.
Collectively, these improvements create a structured clinical workspace that facilitates decisive interventions during critical patient transfers while enhancing patient comfort, dignity, and safety.
Investment in International Patient Repatriation
The configuration of the Learjet 45XR marks the start of a broader fleet modernization strategy. A second aircraft is scheduled to undergo a similar permanent medical configuration in the coming months, bringing the total investment in both cabin conversions to approximately CAD two million. This investment is part of a larger CAD eighteen million commitment towards Airmedic's Bombardier Learjet 45XR fleet, supporting the expansion of its international medical repatriation program.
"By permanently dedicating these aircraft to medical operations, Airmedic reaffirms a clear priority to invest in reliable clinical environments designed for the realities of modern air medical transport while continuously raising the bar for care in the skies," added Fortier.
Airmedic’s Commitment to Community
Beyond international repatriation missions, these aircraft are always on standby to assist local communities and the healthcare network in Quebec in urgent inter-hospital transfers. This local commitment remains central to Airmedic’s mission, which has expanded its service offerings over the past three years to achieve an international reach, through both air ambulance operations (utilizing their Pilatus PC-12 NG and Bombardier Learjet 45XR fleet) and through medical accompaniment services on commercial flights. Strategically based in Montreal, which serves as a key transatlantic hub between Europe and North America, Airmedic combines its Quebec roots with a global outreach.
